My comments on tutoring SAT - Verbal : Above average scoring for verbal/written skills.

My method of tutoring is to work with students where they are and add to their skills, to accomplish the final outcome, preferably an "A" or "B." Some students are visual learners and some are informational learners, or some students combine the two. The potential I see in students is what I try to bring out and have them realize they are capable of going a step further, to reach their goal. The importance of education and the students' continuance of same cannot be stressed enough.
I started out tutoring elementary students in basic math and English grammar while I attended college part time in the 1980's. I continued tutoring young students and adults in the 1990's, tutoring Basic Math, Basic and Intermediate Algebra, Basic Geometry, English Composition, Speech, Study Skills and the Sciences. In addition, tips were given to enhance test-taking skills in hard-to-Ace subjects ... read more

Many people have different teaching skills and techniques. I do not believe any technique to educate a child is better than any other technique. Each child learns differently. Understanding the fact that children learn differently is crucial. The teacher must be able to adapt to the child's learning style. I believe I have the ability to use an array of teaching styles to help children. I would enjoy the opportunity to help children learn.
As a student at the University of Detroit Mercy, I worked as a tutor for two years. I helped other students struggling in mathematics and biology classes. I received my B.S. in biopsychology from the University of Michigan in 2004 and am currently pursuing my M.D. from New York Medical College. For two years I was an ESL teacher in Japan with the company English Club. While there, I acquired unique experience in the field of education. Not only did I have to design and tailor each class to the student's abilities and age, but I had to come up with creative ways to relay the material given the constrains on communication. I also have tutoring experience with 826 Michigan in Ann Arbor, which I did once a week for two years. I am currently a freelance writer for the Metro Times and write my own fiction, so I am able to tutor any field in the Humanities. In high school, I was proficient in Math, earning a 5 on the BC Calculus exam. I became conversational in Japanese and could tutor that as well.
From my time with English Club, I found there is very little advantage for either party when the teacher is draconian. Giving the student little rewards, plenty of encouragement, and ... read more

I believe in empowering our students whenever possible. By this I mean allowing the students to be in charge and have control over their own learning by giving students options. I like working with students in small groups, where I mix their levels of ability thus allowing then to learn not only from me, but from each other as well!

I have privately tutored students that recently arrived from Japan in English with a focus on conversation to enable them to quickly feel comfortable in a new country. As they attained conversation skills I changed my focus to education based teaching with a focus on understanding the classroom teacher and being able to participate in the classroom discussion. I have a degree in English but I have completed through Calculus 2 and have taken Physics and Chemistry courses so I spread the focus of the lessons through different disciplines with the goal of facilitating classroom learning.
I build a relationship of trust with the students and offer positive reinforcement and use humor to engage all of them. My initial goal is to engage the students then move on to teaching with the final goal being the understanding of the subject in a way that is deeper then just memorization. I want t ... read more

All students can learn, but they have different learning styles. Identifying a student's strengths and weaknesses is a key step in the learning process. Whatever their particular style is, students learn best in a positive learning environment which ideally will include the following elements: positive reinforcement, a regular study plan, parental support, and a quiet environment. I have found that another key is to give the student some degree of ownership over what they learn by turning more of the responsibility for framing questions and summarizing what they have learned over to them. One way to make this work is to activate their prior learning. We learn much more of what we do than what we hear. I have a passion for learning and am not ashamed to say that I am still learning. This passion for learning can be contagious.
