For the past six years, I have worked as a secondary ed. mathematics teacher and have done a significant amount of tutoring during this time as well. I love being a teacher and a one-on-one tutor because it allows me to make a difference in students' lives, not only academically, but personally as well. Math is not always a well-liked subject, but I take pride in explaining/teaching math in a way that students can understand. It is of the utmost importance that a student understands the separate components of a theory or process in order to comprehend the larger picture. Therefore, I believe rote learning seriously prohibits true understanding for many students.
