I am currently a tutor and contract educator in the Richmond area. I have been an instructor at Rice University, and I have been a substitute teacher for the Toms River (NJ) school system. I have undergraduate degrees in history and journalism as well as graduate degrees in history. I have also worked in the public history field as a museum interpreter and educator. I have had years to hone both my oral and written communication skills, from my first fledging writing and public speaking efforts as a student to my more recent work as a teacher and scholar. Fun, outgoing teacher of German, History, and Geography

After graduating from the U S Naval Academy, I received my Navy "wings" as a pilot. Following 12 years of service, I became an airline pilot. These experiences have allowed me to travel the world, gaining practical insight into my specialty subjects of history, geography, and German. A Little Bit About Me...

My experiences have spanned all ages and types of children's learning abilities. From a church setting, to a public school to a driver training car. As a substitute teacher, I worked on developing a good rapport with the students. And was always willing to assist them in working towards understanding the concepts before them. I am very patient and understanding with the children, because a stressful environment is not conducive to learning. I believe that a child should be able to learn while they are having fun and that positive reinforcement can go a long way towards helping develop good study skills.

The chance to tutor peers in high school was the initial spark towards considering education as a career. During my undergraduate studies the desire has grown as I was given the opportunity in the role of Teaching Assistant. I found from those experiences that I have an ability to gauge a student’s comprehension of the material during sessions.
