Hidden Talents Tutoring

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire with a degree in computer science, I started tutoring in the Academic Skills Center at UWEC and discovered this was a hidden talent. My instinctive use of the Socratic method earned praise from the director right away. While working at UWEC, I gained experience with a variety of learning and developmental disabilities, including Asperger's syndrome, visual impairment, brain damage, and dyscalculia. At the university, a technical college, and privately, I have tutored elementary through college students in math, chemistry, reading, grammar, computer science, computer literacy, and test preparation. I can provide a letter of recommendation from my former supervisor at UWEC.
My tutoring style focuses on understanding concepts, not simply getting the right answers. This emphasis improves retention and helps students apply t ... read more

I love to learn and help others do the same, whether it is helping a high school dropout pursue and finish their GED or teaching and mentoring children and young adults in volunteer settings; I love to teach, but more importantly, I enjoy trying to find the best way or creative ways to help others learn, understand and grow as people. My teaching style would be described by others as friendly, firm and yet very creative but thorough.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy educating children and providing them the resources to promote their academic understandings. I believe that patience, experience and communication is the greatest key in teaching children. I understand that each child learns a subject through a different style than another child. Therefore, I take the time to know the child as an individual student then implement lessons according to the strength of his/her learning styles. Children are our future; what we teach them today determines what they will know in the future.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style incorporates the Responsive Classroom model, in which proactive rather than reactive teaching is expressed. Students and teacher build a classroom community based on trust, respect and acceptance. Children are involved in creating classroom rules and routines. In the classroom, I continually accommodate for diverse learners, dividing the students by their needs and working with them in small literacy and math groups. However, the students also work together in mixed-ability groups. I am sensitive when planning to institute Gardner's multiple intelligences. Teaching in themes is important to me when teaching younger students especially. For this reason, I believe in incorporating many subject areas, such as literacy, math and science. Finally, I have been trained in both reading and writing workshop. While training, I began to incorporate these strategies in the classroo ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to learn, and when sharing that knowledge, my ultimate goal is to leave the student with a spark that will hopefully motivate them to pursue the subject above and beyond the lesson. Motivation, learning style, and goal structure are components I consider when setting up a lesson. As a computer programmer, I tend to be task oriented. I like to break a project into smaller chunks with clear boundaries. I believe that having the student participate in defining these goals helps them focus, keeps them from getting overwhelmed, and gives them a way to measure their own success. In addition, the teacher needs to ensure the student is motivated to learn by providing materials and methods that are of interest to the student, and match his/her learning style.
