Experienced, question-based biology tutor

I received my M.S. in Biology from Eastern Michigan University in 2014. I taught introductory biology courses there for two years, with subjects ranging from population ecology to genetics. I received acclaim from my students and colleagues for my dedication and commitment to the material and student understanding, as well as my teaching style.

A Little Bit About Me...

I studied at Kalamazoo college, which was a liberal arts school that encouraged students to take a variety of courses. While, my major and expertise is in Biology, I learned about many different subjects and cultures through study abroad and course work. A majority of my teaching experience is centered around sports, as I played college tennis and have always had a passion for sharing my abilities with kids who want to improve their tennis game. A Little Bit About Me...

Teaching children has been part of my life for many years, on many levels. I am currently a full time substitute teacher for Ann Arbor Public Schools. My past experience includes teaching Pre-K, preschool, directing educational camp programming, as well as substitute teaching for various grade levels. My education and experience has made working with children enjoyable and meaningful.
I have a high regard for the brilliance of children. It is my experience that some children need assistance in recognizing their gifts. Science is not the easiest of concepts to grasp so in order to enhance student learning I input a bit of humor into my lesson. I am very good at creating analogies to scientific processes and I have seen positive results from this. My goal is to create student understanding without the typical "memorize and recall" method which I feel is a burden on education and does not promote student learning. I love teaching science and my method is always to make the subject fun and interesting in any way that I can.

A Little Bit About Me...

I wanted to excite others as Chemistry had excited me. I teach the material and why it is so exciting. My style adapts to that specific student’s strengths, weaknesses and interests. I always try and connect their interests to the material, so it is more than just words and starts to be interesting. Chemistry is scary to many people, because they try to memorize, it’s too intricate remember everything. I teach the student to understand why and how substances react or behave. Knowledge of basics, allows the student to solve problems as they are given instead of memorizing specific answers. Problems must be asked from every angle so the student learns to use the basics to solve any scenario. Chemistry then becomes logical.
