In addition to providing help, I will also teach your student some important study skills regardless of the subject that he/she is studying. I personally believe in studying with the purpose of applying the subject in the real world, and will work with your student to develop a solid purpose for the material, as well as help him/her see how to apply the material. In time, it is my goal that your student will be able to study on his/her own, without my help, and be able to fully comprehend and use the data.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love working with children. I have helped with pre-K and grade school children with an emphasis on working with Autistic children. All children can succeed in school given the right tools; just because they do not get the idea from one method does not mean that they won't get it from a different method. I think that all children can learn regardless of age, learning ability or other status, if given a chance.
I spent two years teaching and tutoring Autistic children. I aided in routine skills, verbal skills and dealing with change. I have worked with two different children on these skills. I also have extensive skills in writing and researching for my research papers. I also have great knowledge of APA format and can write an essay in no time flat.

After graduating from the University of Oregon with a BS in Basic Mathematics and Integrated Science, I volunteered for the Peace Corps and found myself teaching math and science in a village school in The Gambia, West Africa. Upon my return from the Peace Corps I landed a teaching job at a Eugene Middle School and have taught 7th and 8th grade mathematics and science for the past 20 years there. I continue to promote mathematics education to the kids at my school with Family Math Nights, math competitions both local and national, and by blogging and newsletters. I obtained my MS in Elementary Education from Western Oregon University in 1993.
I believe that all of my students can learn the material presented to them, if it is presented in the correct way. I have taken a lot of time to learn about the brain research that has been done to discover how different students learn. ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a passion for higher education and helping young men and women reach their academic goals. I facilitated several ethics courses at Gonzaga University and helped tutor fellow graduate students in research methods and statistical analysis at Oregon State University. My teaching style is focused on the individual student. I realize that not all students are receptive to the same teaching style, as a result I am a flexible teacher who is willing to change my approach if the student is not responding positively to my initial teaching techniques.
I have recently completed my Masters degree in Public Policy from Oregon State University where I worked as a social science researcher with the department of sociology. A Little Bit About Me...

I like to use visual learning methods as well as memorization and recognition methods. Seeing a diagram is sometimes not enough. Actually trying to simulate a diagram/problem on your own after seeing it once promotes better understanding. As pertaining to math, depending on the level of the learner, I would do some problems together first and then let them work through it and find out where they run into problems. I always write out the problems along with the learner. I believe that everyone has the potential to learn all subjects as long as they have the motivation and determination to learn. Sometimes a positive and fun mentor is a great way to learn a difficult subject.

A Little Bit About Me...

Nothing excites me more than seeing someone understand something about how the human body works, because I think the human body is fascinating. All the functions that our body must perform at all times for us to live is amazing. My style as a tutor is to try and talk the student through whichever process is in question, and then try to explain the material in a new way. I try to simplify what is being learned, and then the student can build on what he/she understands. My goal is for the student to understand the material, not just get through the process. This is what I love to talk about and teach, and will do whatever I can to make you love to talk about physiology as well!

As a counselor for two summers at Camp Harlow (eugene, OR), I had my hands full playing, mentoring, and getting know up to twelve kids every week from the ages of 5-14. During this time, effective communication skills were paramount to success along with patience and listening. I work hard to communicate clearly and simply on an appropriate level. This has afforded me many opportunities to successfully mentor others. I believe learning is best done through teaching and dynamic communication. Overall, I would like to reinforce that my teaching style emphasizes efficient communication through the proper definition of concepts and the clear and appropriate use of language.

I enjoy teaching. Working with a student one-to-one or even in small groups allows a student to have their individual needs met. Tutoring has the advantage of catching the student where they are struggling to comprehend. I am patient, creative, and prefer to model examples for my students. I believe that a strong foundation in the basics will help a student grasp more difficult concepts. My favorite venue is the use of a dry erase board and having the student model back an example to evaluate if they understood the concepts or the steps to the solution.
I have been an educator for over 10 years. Even as an undergrad, I was interested in working with children and spent my summers employed with the YMCA's youth programs. I have been teaching children of all ages in many settings for the past 6 years. I have worked with students of all levels and helped them be successful. In college I tutored elementary through college students including English Language Learners, in various subjects. I have also helped and taught in the classroom, mostly in small groups or one-on-one. Through my work as an aide at an elementary school I have learned the standards for each grade and am familiar with the curriculum and methods used, especially for the lower students who I work with.
I believe that learning should be fun and effective. It is important to me that students enjoy the discovery and challenge of learning but that they also learn the discipline and perseverance that will help them continue to grow.
