A Little Bit About Me...

The school of Education in North Carolina prepared me well. I am above all flexible. My license reads K-8 and I have taught Art K-6 for a year, Second Grade for two years in NC. Then in 2001 I taught Title One reading in TN for a year then Fourth grade for three more years. My family moved to Northern VA and I taught Fifth grade there for two years before moving back to TN for a year where I taught 8th grade Algebra, and 7th grade English. Since moving to Maine I have only had oppurtunity to work with alterative special Ed with grades 6, 7 and 8.
I have worked with students who were given up on years before, but once the met me, they evolved and became what so many said they never would become, educated.Vgotsky talked about the zone of proximal development and potential. I love to work with students one-on-one from topic selection to final editing. Making the right decisions early in the writing process is critical to the paper’s success, and I have many classroom-tested tools and techniques to help students make the right decisions. My goal is leave each student with the skills they need to succeed in writing –not just a particular paper but any writing assignment they may face.
After earning my BA and PhD in English, I spent many years in industry as an engineer, quality manager, project manager, and technical writer. I have taught a wide range of subjects in college classrooms, from astronomy to information literacy and composition to professional writing. As a journalist and teacher, I've always enjoyed getting the most out of the English language and passing that knowledge on to students of all ages.
