Students generally perform better with hands-on practice. I provide multiple opportunities for hands-on and guided practice as time permits. Associate new concepts to familiar ones. Our memories are largely associative in nature. Therefore, providing connections from new concepts back to well established ones increases our retention and recall. This is especially important in building up understanding in mathematics. Provide relevant examples. A student who is actively enaged in the lesson will learn more.
For the past two years, I have been working as an adjunct instructor and tutor in mathematics and computer information systems for a local Community College. This experience has been so fulfilling, that I am diligently pursuing a career change from Information Technology professional to teaching. I also taught mathematics for one year at a private school.

A Little Bit About Me...

When I was young, I chose to pursue a career in Software Engineering because it was a practical and exciting way to make use of my passion for math. After working for nine years, I became a full mother. I began volunteering at the schools every chance I could. When my children left elementary school behind, I realized I wanted to teach math. I have been a middle school teacher of math for 8 years. My positions have included teaching all math subjects from Math 6 to Geometry. In addition, I tutored students after school and during my planning period.
I believe that all students are capable of learning math. My goal is help each student understand math, and not just memorize steps. I accomplish this by using many methods to present material, including pictures, graphs, manipulatives, experiments, and physical movement.
