My comments on tutoring Poetry : Published poet. Poetry.com finalist.

Dr. Spock, Read, Recite, Repeat Those who do not learn from history, repeat it. (not sure who said this)
I have two masters degrees. I have taught music. My employment involves being the IT manager for an automobile dealership. I have dealt with just about every type of PC Problem, hardware, software, e-mail, website security, etc. I also do the bookkeeping for the enterprise. I have my own income tax service. Also, I fix PCs. As far as the creative side, I attend a writers group in which we do creative writing. I have been to over 10 colleges and pretty much understand pedagogy. Pedagogy is how they teach and how you learn. The more advanced the courses you take the less they help or guide you. You're on your own. They hand you a syllabus, and say go figure it out. Sometimes, you figure it out, and sometimes, you don't. But either way you learn from your experience. Being a ... read more

Learning is Always New

I've taught creative writing to Japanese university students in English only (songs, stories and poetry) for two years, and ESL to all ages in Japanese society for 22 years. In America, I taught freshman public speaking, composition, and literature at the university level. My students have gone on to top-level universities, and placed first in prefectural level speech competitions.
I teach how to learn, and encourage a love of learning, as well as teaching the subject. I base all my lessons on the value they allow the student to impart to society, both economically and ethically. I encourage students to welcome responsibility and empower themselves as learners.

My comments on tutoring Poetry : I compose my own & turn it into Music

I have taught 4th graders for half a year as a requirement for my B.ed & have tutored College students in English Literature & Composition. I can work in one on one sessions or in groups. I work according to the tutee's pace & preferred method of learning.
I have tutored English voluntarily & under the Federal Work Study program in the American Samoa Community College for many years. Upon receiving my Bachelors degree in Elementary Education, I pursued English tutoring as an occupation. I have won several awards as a student & employee in the English field.

Poetry is one of my top subjects!

Learning needs to be enjoyable. When students enjoy what they are learning, that means that they are engaged in what they are learning. When students are engaged, they can better grasp the concepts being taught. I make sure to get to know my student's interests so that I can relate what they are learning to situations that happen in their own lives.
I have an Associates in Arts and Teaching degree from Leeward Community College on O'ahu. While completing my associates degree, I was a leader for an after school program for the Leeward YMCA where I worked with students in grades K-5. Lastly, I was a paraprofessional tutor for Iroquois Point Elementary School where I shadowed an autistic child from his general education classroom to his SPED classroom.

Expereinced SAT / ACT/ GRE tutor with perfect scores

Flexible - it depends on the student's needs and preference. One size fits all teaching is poor teaching.
My tutoring experience has mainly focused on SAT / ACT prep and ESL (TOEFL). I have also been a high school / middle school teacher in social studies / history / humanities for the past 4 years. I'm now working on my Masters at UH-Manoa. My own SAT score is a perfect 2400 (800 for Critical / 800 Math / 800 Writing , which I am happy to show you proof of), but even more important is the fact that I know how to teach the material to students at ALL levels (those trying to break 1500 to those trying to break 2200 for the SAT). I've tutored SAT for a very large international test prep company as well as on my own and I have students who have had remarkable success in improving their scores.

To educate is to improve.

My style is informal. Often the humanities are perceived as "stuffy" so I've found that if students feel comfortable, they are better able to grasp the material.
2 years experience designing and teaching various writing and literature courses. Specifically, I have taught 5 different sections of English 101 (Rhetoric and Composition) at a small college in Maryland. The course was structured so that each student received ample individualized instruction from me outside of class. I have taught Intermediate Expository Writing at the same school, a course that I built in such a way so that students read pieces by relevant writers that demonstrate different modes of writing (Definition, Process Analysis, Cause and Effect, etc.) and then practice writing in these various modes. At the University of Georgia I was enrolled in the PhD. program for Comparative Literature. There, I taugh ... read more

The best successes come after their greatest disappointments

I like to make my tutoring sessions productive by encouraging students to work hard to complete the taste in order to receive a reward in the form of a game or something they enjoy doing. I am very thorough in correcting assignments and make sure they fully understand the concept they are working on. I am very helpful in stimulating critical thinking for creative writing assignments.
I have experience with pre k to 8th grade tutoring in Math and English tutoring to help students prepare for Iolani and Punahou entrance exams through Dr. Takahashi Juku. I have also worked extensively with children from Japan who struggle with English. I can explain English words and grammar in Japanese and well as read and write Japanese .

I love working with children and adults!

I have experience in being a student in both business, math, science and language arts. I hired tutors for my children and I tutored my children but I have not begun to tudor myself. I am looking forward to the experience of tutoring and hope that each experience is fun and worth the money. If not, I will refund the money.
I am an informal teacher because I do not yet have the experience teaching in a formal setting accept for writing lesson plans for language arts. Otherwise, I am looking forward to working with adults and children on their studies because they need the help.

A Little Bit About Me...

Basic piano geared towards student interest level. Many of my students have quit piano from other teachers because they were bored or forced to play the same classical song for 4 months until it was perfect. I engage the student.
I began playing piano at the age of 5. At 13 I started teaching piano in Hawaii Kai at the request of neighbors and the business has continued all these years. One of my former students is a police office now, one is a prosecuting attorney, one sailed on the Hokulea. I have great pride in feeling that my small role as a teacher helped steer them towards a successful career. We all know that music instruction helps students do better at school. Some of the most sought after surgeons in Hawaii are classically trained concert pianists. Students don't need to invest in a piano, a keyboard from Costco does just fine. I use a basic piano method (or books ... read more

I have a bachelors degree in communications with a journalism minor. This background has been very valuable to me. My experience as a trainer has been on the job. I have worked training insurance claims adjustors and sales managers. Training and mentoring are very enjoyable for me.
I understand that we all learn at differently. I believe that a patient and persistent approach to teaching is vital to success. Consistent improvement is very rewarding for both the teacher and the student.

Teaching requires a patient, easygoing individual since not all students learn at similar speeds. There is not one single way to teach, so it is important to encompass different approaches. With this realization, I will teach with an open-mind to strive for effectiveness and success. I will be respectful of my students at all times, even during times of struggle. Pulling through obstacles is what builds character and perseverance, and I know I have performed my job when the student achieves his/her goal of further understanding. Often times, children only begin to tap into their potential when someone else believes in them first. I will be that believer, so that soon each of them shall grow into his/her own motivator.
When I was a freshman in college, I knew that my future was in my hands. I befriended and contacted my chemistry professor and zoology advisor. I worked in both of th ... read more
