Student-centered Tutor with lots of patience.

At this moment, I am a volunteer English/English as a Second Language Tutor at our community library. I tutor two elementary students in Reading and Writing two times a week. The younger student has a hard time focusing. I tried variety of things to help her. When we meet, I ask her first how was her day so I would know if she is tired or how long her attention span would be. After I try to ask her to read a small book that she picks. Then as she reads I try to assess her difficulty. I write down words she can’t read. When she is done, I ask her to write sentences or a story with the difficult words. Then she draws about it. My comments on tutoring GED : I have instructed GED prep for over 10 years and feel competent helping others.

I have taught over 20 years in private & public schools in Hawaii & one summer in Michigan. My experience ranges from elementary to college level. A Little Bit About Me...

When I meet with a new client I create a plan by finding out where they are having trouble with starting with the basics. I make sure each client is prepared with all the basic tools to succeed before moving on to a new section. It is important to have to basics mastered to avoid having problems in the future. I like to teach by example. I do this by creating a problem, showing the steps, and then changing the numbers or variables. This way the the student can remember the process rather than just the answer. I always give positive reinforcement for their hard work. I believe creating challenges and praising clients for their accomplishments helps them retain the material.
