I was in a program called "Study Buddies" all four years at high school. I would devote a couple afternoons a week tutoring middle school students (and eventually high school students). During this time I would help them study for tests, complete assigned work, or help clarify any material that the student didn't understand. Also, I helped these students develop their writing and grammar skills. Starting my junior and senior year of high school, I began "one on one" tutoring with selected individuals. Study buddies was a program where several students would show up and the helpers would assist accordingly, but when I began tutoring I specifically met with them at assigned times. I am a very adaptable teacher--I can easily pick up on a student's needs and abilities, and work to their strengths in that way. I enjoy not only helping them learn, but also their backstory and considering how it affects their learning style. I also have an innate love of learning, and feel that it's a great gift to help someone realize their own potential.
During my undergrad studies at UWRF, I was sponsored to become a tutor in the Writing Center on campus. There was a prerequisite practicum, but it was very hands-on learning. From 1980-1989 I worked as a Program Coordinator for a Developmental Achievement Center for mentally handicapped adults. My responsibilities included teaching, preparing learning materials for basic reading, personal finance, and vocational skills, implementing behavior programs, supervising 7 staff members, and writing quarterly lesson plans and progress reports. I also spent a couple of hours per week for 2 years, tutoring my blind supervisor on the use of computers. A Little Bit About Me...

I have participated in several tutoring training seminars that have taught me various methods of teaching. First of all, students learn differently and it is important to accommodate to those differences. Therefore, I have learned that teaching involves more than just speaking one on one about the material.
