A Little Bit About Me...

I personally can say that I have learned the most & can recall the most from those teachers that I consider my favorites. I believe it is because they knew how to inspire and motivate me to achieve what I thought I couldn’t or didn’t want to do. Those early experience is the inspiration behind the way I teach/tutor and write. I once heard it stated that ‘no one cares how much you know until they know how much you care’. I truly believe that you have to have a genuine interest in the individuals you are trying to inspire in order to make learning a possibility, especially in young children & adolescents. I also believe that in order to make a difference & be a positive influence; you really have to enjoy & have a passion for what you do

I am patient and believe that every child has the ability to learn. Not all children have the same learning style and I can adjust to ensure the child is gaining an understanding of the material and concepts. I prefer to be a coach and allow the student to discover on their own. I will provide examples and guidance but want the student to learn he or she can figure things out for themselves.
For most of my life I have had a passion for education and learning. Education opens up a world of opportunities. A diverse education at Wesleyan University has prepared me to tutor many high school subjects. I earned my BA at Wesleyan in Music but I almost double majored in Environmental Science. The high expectations of professors at Wesleyan pushed me to greatly improve my writing ability, with my music thesis earning me honors in music. Environmental sciences sharpened my science and mathematic ability. Extensive courses in music prepared me to tutor music students in any background or concentration.
I greatly enjoy finding a way to inspire a child to understand the problem at hand. Through from my experience in grade school and my observation of students that attend tough schools I've realized the monotonous class schedule and disciplinary philosophy of most schools deflates most student's desire to succeed. While I can relate to this rebellious reaction I also know that it is no ex ... read more

I believe that education is a fundamental pillar in a person's life, that anyone can learn, and that people can teach each other. My goal is to help students learn what they need to be successful by using hands-on approaches where they can manipulate subject matter and "own it," meaning that they understand it thoroughly. I believe that teaching is reciprocal; in that I can teach for a student to learn and also that a student can teach me so that I can learn. I would strive to inspire a curiosity of learning and loving to learn by providing students with the experiences and opportunities to become comfortable with the material being studied. My motto for teaching is “Let go and jump in” because the only way students can learn and “own it” is by letting go of their fears in learning and get their hands into the subject matter.

My teaching style is hands on I think most children learn better when they can see it for themselves and how things work. For younger children I try to make up a song and sign it for them and they seem to learn better when u sign it. I think learning should be fun and interesting and I feel that I have the patience to be able to teach children.

My ultimate aim would be to teach the student how to successfully learn on his own. I would first determine the set of circumstances unique to each student. For example, are they far behind their class or just having problems grasping some concepts? I would modify my teaching style depending on the situation, but in general I identify facts that need to be memorized and concepts that need to be understood. We would work through material, in a textbook, for example. Finally the student must apply logic and related skills (algebra, for example) needed for problem solving. Problem solving ties facts and concepts together and brings a deeper comprehension of and familiarity with the subject.

A Little Bit About Me...

In the nine years of my graduate and undergraduate education, I have been a teacher, tutor and mentor. As an undergraduate, I was the math and science tutor for student athletes; I helped students to successfully complete Algebra I & II, Geometry, Chemistry, Biology and Physics. As a graduate student, I taught in both lecture and one-on-one settings, and was a mentor for 9 students. I have volunteered my time at science camps for middle school and high school students where I developed and led hands-on activities. In recognition of my passion for science and my teaching skills, I have been an invited lecturer in both high school and college courses. Outside of an academic setting, I worked as a private piano teacher for four years.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love to wokr with children one on one and in small groups. My approach is to break the subject matter down into its most simple level. I also use real life examples to demostrate the subject being taught. I also ensure the student is involved and can demonstrate he/she has understood what has been taught. As a father of four children I am very patient when sitting down and working with children. I believe that every child can do anything they put their mind to as long as they are provided the right guidence and tools, which I provide when I and tutoring.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a recent graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University with a BA in History and Social Sciences and a total GPA of 3.57. This plan of study exposed me to a wide variety of courses aside from history including psychology, English, computer skills, and sociology. Additionally, I have worked for more than 2.5 years as a teacher's aide. I began at LEARN and I currently work for Waterford Public Schools. My most recent position was in the high school; however, this next school year I will be located at Clark Lane Middle School.
I believe that children have different learning styles but they all benefit from positive encouragement from their teachers. I am patient and easy going and I enjoy helping a student reach their fullest potential. It is rewarding for both myself and the child and I feel such positive interactions can make a difference in their learning experience.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have always felt the need and want to help others, whether educationally or socially. As an immigrant who had to learn a new educational system, language, and lifestyle, I know first-hand how difficult a true and successful learning process can be. I believe that my strong communication skills and a patient persona are critical in helping someone achieve educational success. In recognizing each child's individual skills and abilities, I only hope to help them recognize their own strengths and weaknesses to achieve improvement.

Math can be fun, especially when applied to exciting applications. For my work at NASA and the MITRE Corporation I use concepts from Calculus I-II almost everyday. Inspiring students to become excited about math and science is one of my life-long goals. Step by step visual diagrams can be effective tools for describing complex ideas. From my experience as a teacher and student I have had great success creating simple graphics to accompany otherwise dense math equations for circuits, data structures and statistics. This teaching style coupled with a fresh knowledge of math material as a graduating senior make me confident that I can be an asset to your team this summer. I will be returning to my home in Connecticut May 18th and would welcome the opportunity to and discuss starting work at Advanced Learners!
