I think it is more important to understand the student than to understand the material. Don't get me wrong - as a teacher I always re-educate myself to the material if need be - but I feel my real strength as an educator lies in finding a new way to teach the same concept. I hated science and math when I was in junior high and high school. When I asked my teachers questions, they didn't give me the answers I was looking for.
