The first thing I do with any new student is identify his or her learning style so that I may incorporate those specific strategies into my lesson for an effective and personalized learning experience. My lessons are very interactive, and a main aspect is to nurture critical thinking. After setting up a situation, I will pose problems for the student to solve. Critical thinking is necessary in order to navigate foreign grammar and truly understand the material.
I began to realize my love and aptitude for tutoring as a volunteer Japanese instructor for the Daikin home-stay program in 2006. The next two years I volunteered my time with Rosie's International Services tutoring Spanish. At the beginning of the Spring 2008 semester, the Head of the Foreign Language Department, Dr. Maier, submitted my name to a tutoring department at UAH, where I worked tutoring Spanish, Japanese, Latin, ... read more

History has taught me various skills and understandings that other fields may lack. Not only do I have excellent writing and reading skills, I am apt at thinking analytically. Also, my research skills are strong, regardless of the subject. I have also spent three years studying German in order to grasp the language and understand a foreign culture better. The time I spent tutoring was with first graders through the America Reads program and my college. I helped them with basic math and reading skills, and had to adjust my tutoring for various learning styles and rates.
My teaching style depends entirely on the student. With patients and flexibility, a teacher can provide a student with the desire to learn on their own. With guidance, that student can remain motivated and willing to seek his or her own answers. It is important to me to impart that desire, because it aids the student ... read more

I think educators must take into account the different ways in which students learn. For instance, I've noticed that math students may have difficulty adding and subtracting fractions, but have no trouble whatsoever when I ask about dimes and quarters. If an instructor can build a bridge between new material and material the student has already mastered, the student's retention can significantly improve. By getting to know the interests and knowledge of each, I hope to discover bridges that will make learning an exciting and enjoyable process.

A Little Bit About Me...

In many ways, learning can be customized to fit the individual interests of students, and I challenge myself to make each session one filled with new ideas and topics. I believe that the combination of hobbies and personal interests, along with the subject matter is the key to learning. While focusing on science, I strive to introduce other related topics and probe for what each student is interested in. Further, I believe in teaching through learning. Students love to express their own ideas about science, math, and civics, and through challenging these ideas, a teacher can instruct, while simultaneously empowering the student.

More About This Tutor...

As a graduate of the University of Louisville I feel I have developed a knowledge base to further my career. I earned a BA in a subject that I greatly enjoy to study, History. Within the arts I was able to focus on humanities and cultural interaction. Along with these classes I took many general courses to broaden my focus beyond my degree. Most of my college career I was reading, researching, and writing papers that furthered my written communication skills. During the last three years I have worked in a leadership/teacher role to help people develop their knowledge base.
In school I took a class that taught us that everyone learns in a different way. Just like how everyone sees things from different perspectives. After taking that class I realized that there is not just one way to teach or learn. I feel learning should be educational but fun. Repetition is also important. These a ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a graduate of the University of South Alabama with a BS in Secondary Education and a concentration in History. I completed my student teaching in an inner city middle school, giving me the chance to encounter a variety of personalities and learning styles. I have also tutored children of all ages with difficulties in reading and reading comprehension.
I believe that a good education is the basis for achieving the goals set forth for oneself.
