As a visual learner and instructor, I believe the best way for children to retain information is by breaking down the task itself and visualizing it in stages/phases. Often times children feel overwhelmed by the countless lessons taught inside the classroom, resulting in defeated attitudes and poor grades. All students have a variance in their learning style but I have found a cognitive apprenticeship/constructivist approach is a good style to start with. I show the student how to accomplish a task, then we accomplish a similar task together, and finally, the student shows me how to accomplish the task, with my guidance if necessary.
