A Little Bit About Me...

My experience includes earning a bachelor's degree in liberal arts and a master's degree in psychology. I worked as a family therapist for seven years with a wide variety of clients including senior counseling, family counseling and grief counseling. I was lucky to have had inspired teachers in my schooling and I want to bring that to every student who I tutor. I consider myself a muse who can bring out the best in others who want to excel. Everyone has style of teaching that is unique. Mine is at first appearance very laid back, but on closer inspection is very powerful and extremely effective in the long run. My strategy as a teacher is to study and assess a student first, then to develop a plan with the student regarding how we should approach a task or problem. My approach to teaching is to provide what is needed, and sometimes that is not limited to the explicit task at hand. As an English teacher/tutor, I have often found that, rather than merely showing students how to recognize a complete sentence and use correct punctuation and grammar, the more important thing is to prove to them that they can think, and that they are intelligent. To this end, I use gentle Socratic questioning to stimulate students, loosen them up, get them interested, and increase their comfort. Often, what comes out of a student's mouth is surprisingly wonderful, and I quickly say, "That's great! Write that down!"
