A Little Bit About Me...

As a recent college graduate, I was motivated to study Physics because I find the fundamental nature of the physical world fascinating. In addition to my B.S. in Physics, I also minored in Religious Studies and this course of study has enabled me to understand and communicate with people from a variety of different backgrounds. When I wasn’t in class I spent nearly 3 years doing particle physics research for CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, which I would work at in Geneva Switzerland during the summer. During my four years at college I have tutored students from a variety of different skill levels in several different physics courses, including Classical Mechanics, Optics, Electricity and Magnetism, and the Philosophy of Physics.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have tutored math, biology and chemistry for the last 5 years at a college level. In math, I tutored up to the trigonometry level, as well as holding math seminars lasting as long as 2 weeks. In biology, I have tutored human biology, anatomy, physiology and microbiology for 5 years. In addition, I was offered a teaching assistant position for the lab portions of anatomy (which I did for three years) and microbiology (which I did for one year.) I have also tutored entry level chemistry, but not as regularly as the math and biology classes.

Everyone has style of teaching that is unique. Mine is at first appearance very laid back, but on closer inspection is very powerful and extremely effective in the long run. My strategy as a teacher is to study and assess a student first, then to develop a plan with the student regarding how we should approach a task or problem. My approach to teaching is to provide what is needed, and sometimes that is not limited to the explicit task at hand. As an English teacher/tutor, I have often found that, rather than merely showing students how to recognize a complete sentence and use correct punctuation and grammar, the more important thing is to prove to them that they can think, and that they are intelligent. To this end, I use gentle Socratic questioning to stimulate students, loosen them up, get them interested, and increase their comfort.
