I pride myself in having completed my Bachelor of Arts Degree when I was 21 years of age. The degree I completed was a Liberal Arts Degree with an emphasis in Philosophy and Minors in English, Spanish and Music. I feel that this type of a degree gives an individual a well rounded and inclusive outlook regarding many subjects, whether it be Math, History, Reading, Science, Music and/or Art. A few years after I received my degree, I acquired a multiple subject teaching credential from Chapman University, which I utilized here in the Santa Maria/Bonita School District for several years. I was a substitute school teacher for K-6 grades, predominately. I am bilingual in English and Spanish, which is a neccesity in the Santa Maria Valley, with such a large number of farmworker families. I also have experience in tutoring and working one on one with students, which is an environment that I pref ... read more

Conversational. From what I learned in Taiwan little kids are not for me. This is the truth. Kids at about 14 or 15 and older are much preferred. I don't think I am animated enough for younger children...well, not a GROUP of younger children anyway. When it comes to one on one though, it is much different I am sure. I like to give ideas on how to sound out words, remember grammar/math tricks and things like that.
I double majored in Biology and English with a Bachelor of Science degree from a very well known, highly esteemed University in Wisconsin. I went to Taiwan for two months from March-May 2010 and helped teach in a "Bushiban" or cram school to kids aged 6-15. I am currently looking for a full-time job relating to my degree.

I enjoy immensely working with beginning readers. It is so thrilling to me to see the light bulb go off in a child when they grasp a math concept or advance in their reading! I am very patient and really enjoy making it fun and attractive to learn. One of my big gifts is encouragement. I believe in a structured, organized setting for teaching. I believe it is important to be organized and have supplies and curriculum/exercises ready for the students so that there is no time wasted in their learning.

Teaching is one of passions as I am always interested in learning. I feel that the quality of the knowledge obtained rests without doubt in the ambitions the student possesses challenging the teacher to present his best. I have taught and cared after juveniles up to 14 years old, girls, boys, chalenged and all. Planning, daycare and one on one instruction were all on the agenda which helped sharpen my teaching skills
As ambitious a student in the classroom as in life I have completed over 180 college credits at age 24. I like to see children succeed, especially if I contribute to that progress. Teaching has been personal to me as I have regularly helped my nephew many times with his homework when he was younger. My goal is for students to reach success - whether it is to help students understand a concept or to help them solve a problem correctly, I am reluctant to quit and I keep working until students are on the right path or until they have reached their goal. I aspire for students to reach beyond their horizon by attempting more difficult levels once they have mastered the level of learning that they are at.
Living with a disability has posed more challenges in my education than the average person, yet I have faced these challenges and overcome them. As a student at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo I was interested in English education, especially in terms of helping students improving their reading and writing skills. I followed this interest by tutoring at the university writing lab, as well as doing frequent one-on-one tutor sessions with students in need. At the end of each quarter I conducted private, one-on-one counseling sessions with the goal of helping students pass Cal Poly's Graduation Writing Requirement. At Mills College, while taking a class on pedagogical theory, I became a teacher's assistant at Merrit College, where I regularly led group discussions.
I use a teaching paradigm that stresses the importance of student's needs and learning styles. Every student brings unique skills and perspectives to the classroom and tutor session, and because of this I have found that my teaching strategy changes per student and per ... read more

I have dedicated my professional life to helping students and young people achieve their potential. In my experience, often times a student’s ability to learn is tied in with their trust of and rapport with the person teaching them. I feel it is important to allow the student to go at his or her “own pace” and not create a frustrating environment where they may feel too pressured. Although the parents may feel frustrated at this point, it is helpful to get their support and encouragement during the tutoring process. So, ideally, it is important to first create a good learning environment followed by a clear understanding of the subject problem areas (establishing a “baseline”) and then setting up a plan for overcoming those problem areas.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a passion for learning, and a love of all types of diversity. I thrive in one-on-one and small group scenarios where I can identify the learning styles and strengths of each child, and cater to their individuality. When I taught swimming one summer at the YMCA, I quickly became the favored instructor for kids aged 3-8, especially those in the extremes: fearful and fearless. The fearful children needed to be coaxed into confidence so that they could feel safe and proud to succeed at their own pace, while the fearless children needed firm but loving boundaries to ground them in safety and discipline so that they could be freed up to push themselves to their full potential.
For more than 20 years I have been an educator and advocate for children and families in multiple settings. I have eight years of volunteer and paid classroom experience with K-12, teaching and tutoring in a ... read more
