Because each student, young or old, responds to different learning stimuli (graphical or verbal) at diffrent rates, I always try to get to know my student first. I then try to tailor my tutoring to how they respond best and retain what they've learned. I believe in repetition and using examples that a student can relate to, and then testing the student's understanding of the subject matter.

I have taught ESL for 17 years to children and adults from all over the world. A Little Bit About Me...

My first visit is just an assessment of where the student began to get lost regardless of the age or level. More often that not, they have to memorize their fractions to decimal to percentage conversion from 1/2 to 1/12. Given this underlying knowledge allows me to focus on the subject at hand. I usually recommend purchasing a Spark Notes or something similar for the subject as a reference guide. I use examples from the book to review, and assist in homework. I do not do the homework for them, however, do ask how they will approach it before diving in. I add tips and tricks and different ways to approaching the problem. I also assist in anxiety control, study and organization habits.

At age 15, I began mentoring young girls and volunteering for a non-profit organization, counseling developmentally delayed children and at-risk youth. After graduating from California State University in 1992 with a Bachelors degree in Child Development and Family Studies I taught and directed a school for a period of seven years before returning home to homeschool my own children for a period of ten years from preschool through eighth grade.
