A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that students learn in a variety of ways and demonstrate their understand in many ways as well. Therefore, I strive to help students learn what type of learner they are by identifying their strengths and weaknesses and utilizing those in teaching. I also use Bloom's Taxonomy to take learners from learning knowledge to critical thinking. My strength in teaching is my ability to make a connection of the student and being approachable. This had allowed me to be an exciting part of a child's education and ultimately their future as an adult and contributor to society.

What I have learned working with students is that many do not learn in the same manner. I beleive in what is called top process learning. Given the student a concept and allowing them to explore the possibilities of how one arrives at such a concept has allowed deeper critical thinking and strategic planning. However, this method is not predominately taught in Georgia education system. I have found this method to be very effective. The other method is patience. Students who strugge with their academic learning usually are having other areas of difficulty which may be social learning. Having clinical training allows me to make a more accurate assessment.
During the last 10 years I have worked with all levels of students, preschool through college levels. These areas include reading, math, english, psychology, science and social studies. I am a self starter and have worked wi ... read more

For over 20 years, I have had the opportunity to tutor children, peers and older adults in various subjects including math, English and science as well as guide them at presentation skills, critical thinking and small business solutions. As an undergraduate student, I was selected, by the International Teachers Abroad Program at Vanderbilt (ITAP), to teach graduate level, teaching assistants, how to enhance their ability to communicate in English and to communicate their subject matter to undergraduate students. After graduating from Vanderbilt University, I began working full-time at a modern-day orphanage. This 12-year experience gave me plenty of opportunities to expand my skill set with special needs and at-risk, male youth. I have always had a passion for educating children. In the process, I have been able to observe different teachers and their methods. So I was able to form my own tutoring style and method that has worked pretty well for me and my students. I have always encouraged my students to learn by letting them have a more hands on approach and also more interactive. I firmly believe, that even with adults and more in children, in order to hold their attention, they must be interested and involved. So I strive to make my lesson plans captivating and interactive. I believe children can learn easier if they enjoy doing it.
