Providing tools to help each student comprehend the material is essential. I am not a professional teacher, but I played one in newsrooms at several newspapers. During a span of 20 years as reporter, sports writer, copy editor, section editor and editor-in-chief, I trained many new hires -- and even a few veterans -- in spelling, grammar, punctuation, comprehension of written material and in writing. I did not take graduate classes, but I did take the Graduate Record Exam. I scored in the upper 15% in both Verbal and Essay. I do not consider myself a classically trained scholar or academic. As an undergraduate at Penn State, I became interested in education through positive experiences with my own teachers. At this time, I was an active high school volleyball coach, an environmental science teaching assistant, and an environmental science camp counselor.
