I am a conversational teacher. I try to always start with where the student is at and build from there. I like listening to students and relating to them at their level and letting them draw from me all that they can take and encourage their learning. I believe the best learning takes place when students are provided the proper atmosphere in which to learn. I love helping people achieve their goals. I try to find things that the kids enjoy and incorporate those things into my teaching style. I use an intercultural (as opposed to assimilationist) perspective, knowing that language teachers also teach culture; this is not only desirable, it is probably unavoidable. We cannot allow the material on testing instruments to dictate the entire scope of what we teach. I still find it difficult to convince many people that literacy, strictly speaking, is usually not the challenge adult ELLs face. Their challenges usually consist in expanding the English they learned in school, so that it becomes useful for academic purposes, or for basic life-skills in a new country.
