A Little Bit About Me...

I believe knowledge and success go hand-in-hand. That’s one of the main reasons I enjoy teaching and tutoring students of all ages. I’m grateful for the people in my life that have taken the time to teach and show me various things. I enjoy doing the same, passing along any knowledge that I’ve gained because information should be shared. I try to structure my teaching style to be a bit informal, so the student feels comfortable learning and asking questions. My experiences as a tutor and teacher have taught me enthusiasm and encouragement go a long way in helping a student both tackle and tolerate, if not enjoy, the subject. A few small successes give a student the self esteem to continue pursuing harder problems in a difficult subject. It is always important to start small, and work one's way up at the student's own personal pace. Adapting to the learning style of the individual is extremely important when working one-on-one. There are many ways to learn; verbal, visual, hands-on, reading instructions, etc... Learning is never one-size-fits-all and I try to keep that in mind as I teach.

I have had an opportunity to teach in several different locations and age groups. I first taught in a low income preschool where I focused on making children excited to learn through presenting the material in an interesting manor. Next, I spent two semesters in college working as a general chemistry lab instructor. I used the scientific method to have the students reach conclusions on their own and to have to present and explain these conclusions to their peers. I spent the last two years as a Peace Corps Volunteer where I gave many training and worked to teach a youth group. I tried to remain culturally sensitive and work to have the students remain comfortable and work to collaborate with each other.

I've been teaching since I was an 18-year-old Navy Hospital Corpsman in the 1970's. I tutored math, Biology and Chemistry during undergrad and med school and helped friends with the grammar for their research papers. I'm weary of dealing with managed care and am currently a little over than a year away from getting my Masters in Education.
I believe all children want to learn. Sometimes it takes some work to find the spark that ignites the learning process. Unfortunately, a larger classroom may not be the best environment to find that spark in some kids. I've been successful with both children and adults because I have a knack for finding out what motivates them. Once I know something about how a student thinks, I can better come up with concepts that will help her or him understand the subject.

In addition I have many years experience in software engineering, technical writing, software quality assurance, and technical editing.
