A Little Bit About Me...

My degree in physics has equipped me with mathematical, scientific and analytical knowledge. This enables me to comfortably tutor students in many topics within math and science fields. My first teaching experience took place at Camp Powhatan, a summer camp for Boy Scouts, where I was an instructor for two summers. There I taught young Boy Scouts (ages 11 to 18) the fundamentals of swimming, lifesaving, canoeing, pioneering, cooking, and orienteering.
I believe students learn better when the instructor makes it clear where a topic falls within the over-arching themes of the class. Students are then better able place new techniques and knowledge in the context of whatever discipline or field is being taught. I have over time developed a strong desire to teach and to ignite in others the same passion for learning that my teachers ignited in me. I believe that everyone has the ability to understand mathematics regardless of age and that the right teacher can not only facilitate deep understanding but can foster an enthusiasm for the subject that will naturally follow from such understanding. My teaching style is laid-back but focused, and the most important thing to me is to be patient with the student and to provide a firm foundation by ensuring that each troublesome concept is well understood. I find that, with math, looking at a concept from a different angle or providing an intuitive physical example is a boon.
