I tutored an 8th grade-9th grade boy in TCAPS preparation and helped him complete homework in Math (pre-algebra, algebra, and pre-geometry), Science (biology), and English. I tutored him for two years. After I graduated high school I was accepted to the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where I am currently in the spring semester of my sophomore year. I will be returning to Johnson City this summer and am available to tutor. I babysit two young boys currently, one of whom is 5 and I help him with kindergarten homework, such as learning words and reading. I am capable of helping with all ages. I can tutor most any subject through high school with the exception of advanced chemistry and calculus, and would need to be refreshed on pre-cal and algebra ll before being comfortable helping students with it. Reading is one of my top subjects! Dyslexia Tutor

Gayle Evans is a certified Barton tutor. She has a driving passion to teach dyslexic learners, empowering them to overcome their fears and thrive the way they were meant to. Upon finishing a busy era of home educating her own children, after the fact, she realized at least two of her children had dyslexia. During that time, dyslexia was misunderstood and not well supported. Attending an introductory Susan Barton seminar explaining dyslexia left her on the edge of her seat with a new mission in life. She began as a volunteer tutor at a public charter school in San Jose, working with dyslexic students using an Orton-Gillingham based intervention. For nearly 10 years, she has worked as a Barton tutor, helping children from ages 6 to 19 overcome dyslexia. To take a student from fearful hesitation to increasing confidence to discover the joy of reading is incredibly rewarding and border ... read more

My comments on tutoring Reading : I am an avid reader, having read thousands of books. My reading interests are wide and varied, and involve numerous styles, from authors as wide-ranging as Mark Twain, James Joyce, Charles Dickens, Alexander Pope, and Chaucer, to name a few.

I like to use the Socratic method, mainly by asking questions and challenging assumptions. In addition, I like to engage those I teach, challenging them to think about what they previously have not considered. I believe in building on successes, and offering constructive criticism, where appropriate.
I have mentored various people since 2000, in all types of subjects, including math, science, social sciences, English, writing, literature, and other related subjects. My academic record is very strong, and I believe empowering those I work with every single time. The only pre-requisites are that you have to be willing to learn, and learn how to learn.

I have a somewhat relaxed teaching style that does not compromise the distinction or respect between student and teacher. This teaching style results in a classroom atmosphere where students feel comfortable responding to my questions and asking for further clarification about complex topics. Many students have told me that my teaching style is refreshing and they feel comfortable in class.
With my numerous experiences in education, I think I could be a great asset in helping students become more knowledgeable. I have worked as a Tutor, Assistant Teacher, and did a short placement as an Interim Teacher. I can easily adjust to changing environments that will best suit the student’s potential. I was a Tutor in an after school program, and was an Assistant Teacher in a Special Education classroom. I finished an Interim Teaching placement in a middle school A.P. English classroom.

I am a discussion based teacher. I prefer to engage the students higher level thinking with a questioning approach. I do not think that lecture or rote memorization are proper ways to educate a child. I believe that teachers affect a students learning not just through the subject but also through the real world examples that should be the core of all learning. Students will only reach their potential when they are challenged beyond what they feel they are capable.
I am blessed to have attended a college that prepared me for real world situations and classroom circumstances. I have achieved two bachelor's degrees, a BS in bible and a BS in elementary education. I have also achieved a master's in holistic education. These degree programs provided me with a grasp of all subject areas in the elementary portion of schooling. I have also had the pleasure of tutoring many athletes ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Although my degree and early experience is in journalism, I have spent 16 years teaching middle school English. During that time I taught English Language Arts, Journalism, and TV Production. I have always nurtured a love for English literature, both in myself and in my students. In addition, my experience as a reporter and freelance writer gives me deeper insight into the artistry of written English.
I believe that learning comes from a good rapport between teacher and student. I like to make students feel at ease, and then progress is achieved in the context of a safe learning environment. Rather than taking an authoritarian approach, I prefer to act as a kindly mentor and facilitator of students' learning processes. Learning is a voyage of discovery; my role is to show students how to set foot upon that road. However, I believe in setting high standards for student achievement.

I have found that children are very comfortable with me, which makes the learning process flow more smoothly. I was trained to discover the problems that prevent children from learning to read and absorb written material. Children learn in different ways, and I try to individualize my teaching methods to suit the individual child.
After earning my teaching degree in English, I gained some middle school and high school teaching experience, then took a different path for some years. While earning my master's degree in reading education, I gained experience by helping teach children at Western Carolina University's reading clinic in Asheville. I have done some individual tutoring on my own, while searching for a position in my field. As an avid reader myself, I know the value of a sound reading ability. I try to instill that love of reading in my students.

I love teaching and tutoring children of all ages. Although I have only formally been tutoring for about 6 years, I was a tutor all through my childhood helping other children learn when I finished with my classwork. Since first grade I have always wanted to be a teacher, although my brain tried to steer me in a different direction i ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I have experienced various types of teaching styles while in school. I have learned a long the way every student is different and learns in a different way. In high school and all even through college math had always been my hardest subject. My second year in college I had a math professor that had a different approach to teaching math and for the first time in my life I finally understood math! Finding the right teaching approach is the key to success!

Yes, I do love teaching and yes, I do believe that all children can learn and be successful. I believe that most children are more intelligent than generally thought, but some may need help in showing "how smart they are." I challenge students to perform at high levels and used multisensory techniques to give them the opportunity to learn necessary skills for achieving. I believe in using both discovery and direct instruction methods for students to learn. I have been called a "constructivist" teacher. I believe that I have made a difference in the lives of students I have taught over the years.
I have been a Reading - Title I - Teacher in High School and in Elementary School (K-5) in Buncombe County North Carolina, a classroom teacher in grades 1-6 in bush Alaska. I ask a lot of questions to get the students thinking. I believe in teaching young people and the adults I have worked with to think critically fist. Then I work with them on being able to articulate and write their ideas down...subject matter follows naturally if they have the confidence and can just think for themselves not just spit back facts and what others want to hear. I would travel and relocate for a job.
I have worn many hats and done many things that all apply to the classroom and teaching young people. I believe that education is the key to life and living. But a person has to believe they can do it first and I believe everyone can learn and should be given the opportunity

I utilize a wide-range of teaching styles in order to adapt to each student’s specific needs and abilities. I believe the key to learning is asking questions, and thus encourage students to use discourse and debate as their greatest academic assets. In addition to my educational experience, I have other skills, passions, and interests that make me excited to work with children. As an artist, my primary interests lie in theatre, writing, and storytelling, and thus the ideas of imagination, personal growth, and creativity – so essential to a student’s mind – are inherently intertwined with who I am as a person. As an arts educator, I would thus hope to incorporate these qualities into my role as tutor.
As a recent UNC-Chapel Hill graduate with majors in journalism, dramatic art, and creative writing, I have extensive experience in arts education, academic outreach, and childcare that ... read more
