I have a BS in Biology and Genetics from North Carolina State University. I have recently taken a refresher course in Anatomy and Physiology to go back to school for radiology. I have taken college level math courses through Calculus II, I have taken General Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Organic Chemistry, and multiple courses in Genetics. I have helped tutor in high school for the Chemistry AP exam and helped fellow students in college.
I believe in being hands on and visual, many students have problems in math and science because they are unable to visualize the words written in their books. I am extremly organized so that my time is best spent on the most difficult areas for each individual student.

Poor college kid trying to make a living

Friendly understanding and patient. You gotta relate the kid and make them want to learn if they are actually gonna listen and absorb the information.
I’m good with kids, high school and below I can break it down easily, I have good study habits, and I like to encourage people to better themselves educationally. My comments on tutoring Chemistry : I never made below a "B+" average in this subject, and understand the dynamics, processes, and procedures behind this subject, including the periodic table of elements, as well as balancing chemical equations.

I like to use the Socratic method, mainly by asking questions and challenging assumptions. In addition, I like to engage those I teach, challenging them to think about what they previously have not considered. I believe in building on successes, and offering constructive criticism, where appropriate.
I have mentored various people since 2000, in all types of subjects, including math, science, social sciences, English, writing, literature, and other related subjects. My academic record is very strong, and I believe empowering those I work with every single time. The only pre-requisites are that you have to be willing to learn, and learn how to learn.

A Little Bit About Me...

During my four years at East TN State University (ETSU), I tutored college students in General and Organic Chemistry, and multiple Psychology courses. I also taught for Kaplan Test Prep in small classes and prepared high school students for the SAT and ACT. I graduated in 2004 with a BS in Psychology. I then went to South College to get my teaching certificate. I student taught for 16 weeks under two wonderful mentoring teachers, and started subbing in January 2005. In August 2005 I received a full-time teaching position, and that is my current career.
I love teaching and tutoring children of all ages. I enjoy working with students to help them understand biology and how they participate in a biological world. I believe that the most important concept in teaching is engagement with the student. I strive to engage students in biology by exploring how biological concepts relate to the students life. Genetic diseases, growth and development, and the environment are biological topics that students already participate in; and I strive to teach by relating these topics to the student’s own life.
For the last two years I have taught college level biology labs. These have been introductory biology classes with course material beginning with cell biology and ending with ecology. In 2010 I received the Outstanding Teaching Assistant award form the biology department. My experiences are in both biology and environmental science.
