Being able to help others understand math gives me such a great feeling of accomplishment. I feel like I am helping them to solve a riddle and know from personal experience the vast opportunities that understanding math can give to you. I believe that the majority of students are not given the proper tools or techniques to understand math and that it needs to be individualized. Math is its own language and needs to be translated into that of the student in order for them to teach themselves. I believe the key to good teaching is understanding the subject from the student's perspective. As a teacher, it is easy to take for granted certain assumptions and prior knowledge that a student may lack. Each student brings a unique approach and starting point to the learning experience. The teacher's job is to find that starting point and lead the student from there to a place of deeper understanding and knowledge. If a student struggles to understand something, the teacher has probably "skipped a step" somewhere, and omitted some piece of the puzzle that the student does not yet have. I am a recent graduate of Eastern Connecticut State University with a BA in History and Social Sciences and a total GPA of 3.57. This plan of study exposed me to a wide variety of courses aside from history including psychology, English, computer skills, and sociology.
