My foremost goal as a teacher is to leave students with both the desire and the ability to analyze real phenomena in the world around them. To do this, I believe you need to first make students have a stake in subject matter beyond the grade they earn. Second, you must present the material in a clear, organized, and engaging way. In my teaching experience, I have found that both of these features need to be present to have a successful class. I am a public school teacher entering my fifth year in teaching. I have tutored informally throughout high school and college, both my fellow peers and lower income students. I was part of an ESL mentoring high school program during my time in New York. During my time at college, I created a mentoring committee for underclassman that focused on business related items and school curriculum. As I spent most of my time in groups studying, I learned that I was very good at explaining principles and material, regardless of subject matter. I am patient, warm, and pleasant. What I do is not so much teach the material as a way to learn the material. My methods are to understand the subject matter the students are weak on and learn it with them, displaying that it takes time learning anything and most of the work in understanding subjects are difficult. Learning something with someone makes it easier. It allows for an easier and more constant interaction.
