A Little Bit About Me...

I chose this major because I am fascinated by children, and how they all develop at their own individual rate. I am patient and kind, but at the same time, I like push a child to reach the potential that they usually do not ever realize they have. Children have different methods of learning and unfortunately, classroom settings do not meet all the students' needs. Some are more hands on, while some are just listeners. I like to find out what works best for the child, and go from there.
I am a proud graduate of Iowa State University in Child, Adult, and Family Services with an emphasis on child development. With my education I have had experience researching child development in a hands on manner through the Iowa State's Child Development Lab, which ranges of children from birth to six years old. I believe in setting high expectations for students and believe that all students can learn and excel. Most of the students I work with have had such negative experiences with school that they become frustrated. I work to restore their self-esteem and to teach them to recognize what they need to do to learn. I compare my students to cars: some have automatic transmissions and they just get in and drive without much effort; some are like standard transmissions - it's not as easy for them, it's more work to learn how to work a clutch and shift gears, but they can learn to go as far and as well as the "automatic transmission" students.
