My comments on tutoring Reading : I tutored a student for 3-4 years in reading. He was educationally behind in his reading skills. He was 14 years old when I started, but he was at a 1st grade reading level. After tutoring him, I was able to get him up to an 8th grade reading level.
I try to get my students to find the answer for themselves by asking them questions. Students need to come to an understanding of their material and that won't happen if I continually give them the answers. I'm also very patient with my students. If they don't grasp a concept or topic that we're working on, I will continue to explain it to them in different ways until it makes sense.
I have been tutoring students for about 5 years. I started when I was a junior in high school. My first experiences tutoring were through the National Honor Society. I volunteered after school once or twice per week and I tutored mainly ESL students in Math and English. My senior year of high school and throughout the time I was in college, I tutored a high school student who had educational and developmental deficits.
