My teaching style consists of finding that unique style that will suit each individual student. Growing up, I noticed that it was very hard for certain students to grasp certain concepts because they were not engaged in the teaching method. It is no secret that everyone learns a certain way, and no two ways are ever the same. When I was a classroom teacher, I tried as much as possible to individualize my instruction. I would begin each lesson with whole class instructions, but once the students began the work, I would move around the room in order to give more focused attention to those that required it. My classroom always focused on personal progress rather than comparisons. I believe that learning is most likely to occur when students believe in their own ability to learn and are able to discuss and reflect on their own learning.
I began my teaching career as a tutor for first grade ESL students. The following year I was hired by the Chicago Public School system as a third grade teacher, where I taught for six years.
