Calculus I is one of my top subjects!

I completed and earned my Bachelor of Science degree cum laude in Mathematics from Marietta College in May 2012. I am currently attending John Carroll University to pursue my Masters degree. I tutored in high school and college for about 8 years. I am a mathematics major with a minor in history. I have taken upper level math courses all my life and I have helped out/participated with the college's mathematics department on occasion. I also have a love for the sciences, especially taking Chemistry and Astronomy just recently. My strong fields in mathematics include Algebra, PreCalculus, Calculus I, II, III and Discrete Mathematics.
I love mathematics, I am not going to deny it. I find it to be one of the most thrilling subjects out there. I can understand why so many people dislike it. My job will be not to make you like it but to help you appreciate it and not take it for granted. ... read more

Specialized in Math (Algebra, Calculus, Middle School)

I specialized in math tutoring. I graduated as an applied mathematics master degree and currently working as an actuary. I also taught middle school students on algebra when I was in undergrad. One of my goal is to keep the student have interests and have confidence and fall in love working on challenge questions.
I understand that hard work and dedication to learning can pay off. I also realized that different students suit different methods of teaching, which can have significant improvement not only on the grades but the interests of materials. I have had the pleasure of helping students using different types of teaching methods see their grades and scores improve.

Punctual - prepared and professional. I look at learning rep. styles of students (pictorial, word or kinesthehic). I try to make the learning experience as painless as possible (especially math). Depending on the subject, I like to schedule 2-2.5 hrs ateach session. I also like to work out problems for students and e-mail them the results, where applicable.

My teaching style varies depending on the area of math being taught. For individualized instruction I mainly use a questioning process to lead individual students to discover how to process the math problems. This has them involved with building the solutions to the various problems and helps reinforce what they already know. I then instruct on the areas they do not understand or struggle getting this helps focus my efforts on their needs. This method also helps students close the knowledge gaps and understand where they need to work the most. I also like to work through some of these same areas with the parents when possible so they can also assist their student

As a tutor, I like to get the students engage in the thought process behind a mathematical concepts before proceeding to solving the maths problem. I often use real life examples that students can relate to in explaining both difficult and easy concepts. I found this approach to be helpful to student's learning experience.

A Little Bit About Me...

I feel that since tutoring is typically a one-one-one interaction, each student needs a teaching style that is best suited for how they learn. For mathematics, the method that typically works the best is repetition. Repeatedly going through the steps needed to solve a math problem not only cements the process in the students’ brains but also helps them to understand how the numbers work into the problem in different situations. When tutoring French, I try to speak French at all times and focus on the area where the student has the most trouble, such as verb conjugation, pronunciation, or grammar.
