When I begin tutoring a new student, my first objective is for us to get to know each other. The student will not be able to receive very much from me until he/she is comfortable with me. Once they feel that I care, they open up and the learning really begins! Some children respond to verbal teaching, while others prefer visual teaching, or others like to interact with their environment (the hands on approach). Each child has their own language. I have always been involved in the teaching industry. Weather that is after school care or tutoring and mentoring. I was an Americorps Volunteer from 2000-2001 working within education. I was an in class tutor for kindergarden, 3rd and 5th grades. I also taught at Apopka Middle and drop out prevention at Apopka High School. I facilitated a boys group every Tuesday night and a youth group every Wednesday night. I did summer camps and tutoring after school as well.
My teaching style is that we do not move on until you (the student) "get it". If that is an hour or two, that's fine, or a week or two, that is fine as well. I need the student to know the material in order to move on.
