I am finishing up my Bachelors degree in Dietetics at SUNY Oneonta- I will be graduated in December. I have been offered positions as a chemistry tutor but denied because of my other jobs. I was a student mentor for a year in high school to students that were "slacking" or wasn't understanding one or more of their classes. I worked at Albany ARC and worked to train young adults and adults in the kitchen- which also included basic skills such as counting and reading.
I really would like to help make a difference in someone's life and help them understand academics just like myself. When I try to teach someone, I always explain to them the subject as basic and simple as possible. I give a few examples, and then help them figure it out themselves. The first is that chemistry is not necessarily intuitive. It studies particles that are too small to see and cannot be observed directly. I began school as a Biology major for 2 years, so I have a great science background. I love to teach children. I finished my Masters program in December 07 and began teaching at the school I did my internship at, Briarcliff MS. I taught grades 6-8 and filled in for a Special Ed teacher at the end of the year. While obtaining my biology degree from LeMoyne college I worked with underpriviledged children in an afterschool program. This program was aimed at keeping these children off the street while their parents were at work along with helping them improve their grades. My duties included helping them with their homework and tutoring them in problem subjects as expressed by their teachers. This was a volunteer job that I found very rewarding.
