A Little Bit About Me...

My experience in tutoring began in high school when I volunteered for my local library, in a program aimed towards improving students’ reading ability. Having had considerable difficulty learning to read myself, I felt it was important that I attempt to pass this on to others. When I entered Knox College I was focusing on English, and ended up helping my fellow students with writing and editing their papers.
I have always sought to lead rather than force something upon the student by rote. Most important is to present the information in a way that is both interesting and memorable. It is my experience that people remember things better when they truly understand the process, and have reason to listen to the explanation.

My favorite English teacher in college affected me because he focused on my individual strengths and interests, instead of giving cookie cutter instruction. I believe this is essential in teaching, for every student learns in his own particular way. My teaching style depends on the student. Some students need me to explain the subject material to them rather than read it from the book, while other students benefit most if they work through a problem and then ask me a question when they get stuck. Though regardless of the student, I always ask questions as we go, because I know that students learn best when they engage with the material.
I graduated this spring with honors from Carleton College. For my senior thesis in Math, three of my colleagues and I designed a Challenge Math curriculum for fifth grade students. Together we compiled our lessons into a book, and once a week each we taught a small group of students. When I moved to Boulder this summer, I began tutoring CU students, adults taking online courses, and high school students. I also have experience tutoring for the SAT, ACT, and GRE.

As both a teacher and a tutor, I have found several things to be important to a successful educator. First is engagement. I find it necessary to engage the student and involve them in the lesson. I've found that even something as simple as using props to illustrate a point helps the student understand the material better, but also be more interested in learning. Secondly, I've found that flexibility is also important. I understand that all students learn differently, and it is imperative that the teacher learns to adapt to each student's style, strengths, and weaknesses.
