A Little Bit About Me...

I believe all children have potential to learn. I always try to find the best approach for teaching each child. I believe in positive reinforcement and giving a child a feeling of accomplishment after they have experienced so many feelings of failure. Teaching a child one on one is a much needed teaching method for a lot of children. I try to make learning fun and I love to see the light bulb pop on in their little minds!
I have taught public school in the Montgomery County School System for 26 years. I retired May 2010. I have taught grades 1-6 in All subject areas. I received my Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1983 from Auburn University. I received my Master's Degree in Education from Troy State University at Montgomery in 1990. I have worked extensively with children in many areas due to the No Child left Behind Act. I have been to a Reading Academy, workshops, on t ... read more

I would describe my philosophy of education as an eclectic mixture of perennialism, progressivism, existentialism, and essentialism. As a prospective educator, I find it extremely important to ensure student learn basic skills and concepts in a classroom environment that is conducive to leaning. Students are valued commodities to our tomorrow and as an educator, I assume responsibility to instill moral values that promote students becoming ideal citizens. Students also need thought provoking stimulation that scaffolds learned material and experiences while erecting new concepts, ideas and more concise understanding. Experimentation, manipulative objects and social interaction between students is essential when considering the different learning styles of students and when coupled with nurtured creativity and individuality students are sure to learn, grow, and develop into valued assets t ... read more

Lets make math easy and Fun!

I like to break math down in a simple way at times using life analagies to get the student to understand and relate better to the subject matter.
I have tutored friens, family, and classmates. I have always done well in math classes in elementary, middle school, high school, and college. Throughout all of those levels of school, I usually was the first or second person to finish an examination. I really like math alot because it is simple and to the point. In math there is typically only one answer to the problem. There is no ambiguity! This is the part that I loved so much. I consider myslf to be a problem solver and enjoy working well with others. That is why I love math so much but I also loved psychology for similiar reasons. As you can imagine, it wasn't an easy choice when it was time to select a major for college. i have no regrets because now I get to help my 9-year old son ... read more

I have had over 15 years of tutoring and/or teaching experience. I have worked with different age groups, my preferred and primary being adults. I am currently working on my master’s thesis in mathematics, by which I expect to graduate fairly soon. I am patient, creative, and thorough in my interaction with students. I am also flexible to manage different learning styles while effectively achieving the learning goals of the student.
I start off with the student displaying what they know and/or don't know. I give an example and and encourage feedback in order to guage the student's understanding. Finally, I have the student to show their understanding. Sometimes, it may take different methods because people learn differently.
