My comments on tutoring Study Skills : Study skills are often misunderstood and minimized. But study skills, in reality, are what often make the difference, especially in a very difficult course, in success and failure in the course. I have a battery of study skills that have helped me greatly over the years, and have also helped those I have tutored over the years.

I believe that a student should have the time to figure things out on their own, but with guidance from their tutor or teacher. I think I should provide a student with all the tools they need, and then through example I will teach a student to figure things out for themselves. There is no other way that I know of to quickly build the confidence of a student and the belief in one's self, than to teach a student how to figure out problems on their own. It is a very uplifting and life changing experience for a student to finally have confidence in self. My role is to encourage, guide, and correct when they may be going in the wrong direction while learning.

Teaching has always been a passion of mine and I thoroughly enjoy helping students to realize their full potential. I believe that all students are capable of achieving academic success so long as the teacher provides a means through which students can make personal connections with the material. I believe providing opportunities for choice encourages exploration of academic sources in even the most hesitant of students because their unique perspectives are being met and acknowledged. I am patient, knowledgeable, creative, and most importantly, dedicated to the academic success of your child.

While at Purdue, I studied English literature and writing (academic and creative). I began college studying English education. This gave me experience in the classroom at the observation level. I pursued courses exploring classroom techniques, dynamics, and the incorporation of technology. My minor in Communication introduced me to Associated Press style and improved my copy editing skills. My second minor in Art fostered my ability to approach problems creatively. While I eventually switched my major to English, I have always loved teaching. In high school, I was given the unique opportunity to go into an elementary classroom on a daily basis and tutor students in reading through STRIVE (Students and Teachers Reaching in Volunteer Efforts).
