In College, I pursued my interest in English language by majoring in Literature, with an emphasis upon etymology, linguistics, speech and rhetoric. My senior thesis on the poetic technique of Alexander Pope earned both an "Honors A" and that year's sole English Faculty Award. I later chose to attend a law school that was renowned for its general emphasis upon writing and, in particular, "plain English" legal communication. If students lack motivation or direction, it’s often because they are trying to perform an advanced task without basic skills. For example, many students know about the “five-paragraph essay” format, but don’t know how to organize the individual sentences. The first part of my philosophy focuses on providing students with these basic skills, as doing so prepares and makes them eager to face their assignments.
