Creative Teacher with 15 Years of Classroom Experience :)

Hands on, creative, and flexible. Children learn when learning is fun and engaging.
With 15 years of classroom teaching experience, I have worked with children with many different needs and learning styles. I have found that there is no "one sized fits all" when it comes to children. Therefore, I come prepared with a variety of techniques and activities to help engage your child while learning or reviewing skills. I have taught all elementary grades Kindergarten through Fifth grade.

Reading and Spelling Tutor: Specializing in Dyslexia/LD/ADHD

I teach using the Barton Reading and Spelling System (an Orton-Gillingham based program). This program teaches students to read and spell phonetically (sounding out words). I use a multi-sensory method (see a word, touch a word, say a word, hear a word), so that the student is completely engaged in the lesson through the use of most of their senses. This program was designed for students with dyslexia and learning disabilities, but would help anyone (child or adult) that struggles with reading and spelling, especially individuals with ADD/ADHD. I have seen quite a great deal of growth in the students I am currently working with and I absolutely love teaching with the Barton System!
I have a degree in Elementary Education and have been certified to use the Barton Reading and Spelling System. I have 3 years of experience in teaching grades K and 1 and 1 year of experience in teaching ... read more

Love watching children learn and grow!

I use a variety of teaching styles and methods to reach students because I know that all students are different and learn better with different methods. I try to find creative ways to reach students to try to make learning as engaging and meaningful as possible.
I graduated from East Carolina University with a B.S. in Elementary Education (K-6) as well as Reading Certification (K-12). I did an internship in 1st grade as well as taught some in 2nd and 3rd grade. I know that each child is different and that I must differentiate my teaching methods in order to reach all children. I love learning new and creative ways to teach content to children and trying to make learning as engaging and meaningful as possible for all.

More About This Tutor...

I love to teach, it is my passion in life. Every student has intelligence and every student is a genius in one subject or another in school. Any and all students can learn you just have to apply the material to them that fits their particular interests. I try to stay up to date on all the new trends and fads that kids are into in order to stay fresh and up to date with them and apply all my knowledge in science and in other subjects to fit them specifically. I have no one set way to teach any level of student because each person and group dynamic is much different than the next. I try to adapt all my lessons to fit all the learning styles (visual, auditory, hands-on, etc). I have plenty of experience teaching special needs students so I adapt my lesson plans to fit their particular learning styles as well. I try to be an educator rather than a teacher because students will remembe ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I love teaching and enjoy working with children and adults. The only thing I ask is that the student be willing to learn. I love any learning environment. I love to make the most of any learning opportunity. Learning is not limited to the classroom. I learn new things every day. My favorite professor is 76 years old; I want to be just like her. I embrace Gardner's Theory of Multiple Intelligence. The most exciting experience for me is to teach a student and watch that student lean over and help another student. I love the synergy of teaching.
I have spent the last 10 years as a student and as an instructor. I realized that I needed computer skills and decided to get the skills necessary to survive. While I was a student, I acted as a tutor. This reminded me how much I love teaching. After I graduated from Nash, I began working as an adjunct instructor. I provide positive, corrective feedback. I want my students to know that I care about them, and that I believe that they can be successful learners. All children are capable of achieving some element of success. If students feel validated,it is amazing what they can achieve! I treat others with respect. I am dedicated to my students, and I am willing to try different approaches to learning. As a teacher, I seek to better myself, so that I can better reach my students and meet their needs. More About This Tutor...

As a teacher, I care about students. I believe that positive encouragement is the way to motivate. I worked as a private/public school teacher to provide each student that I worked with the academic/social support that was needed. I used my background in child development to motivate students to work to their potential. I have worked with students from a variety of ethnic/social backgrounds who had a wide range of ability levels. My goal was to meet the needs of the individual learning style of each student. I have tried to make a difference in the lives of children and have them move to the next level of learning, not only with the concepts and knowledge that was necessary, but with a love of the learning process.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a very unique teaching style that enables my students to have fun while learning. I can easily see the individual needs of all of the students I teach. Each and every student that I teach is first and foremost a human being. I treat them as I would like my own children to be treated. I understand that what will appeal to one child will not necessarily work with another. I feel that creating a mutually respectful relationship is fundamental in being able to really reach and teach a child.
I have been very fortunate to have worked with many different age groups and in many different settings, since I first began working in the education field in 2000. As a recent graduate from East Carolina University, I have obtained my Bachelor's Degree in Biology. Throughout the extensive coursework, I became an excellent source of information, whether it pertained to science, math, or English. I have written numerous laboratory reports, as well as many papers. I have helped other students in their quest for higher knowledge by giving them advice as well as helping them in what they are having trouble with. I have also helped proctor tests and I was a physical education pupil instructor for one semester, where I helped to engage them in physical activities. I help out in a special education class by volunteering my time whenever the need is available.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have enjoyed tutoring over the last year. I believe that when the learning style of a child is found, that child can learn anything! I myself have always been more of a visual learner. As a tutor one must understand that every child is different and unique in their own learning abilities. A tutor should always brainstorm and find new ways to help a child learn and have fun learning.
Through earning my BA in psychology I have gained a finer understanding in people and cognitive development umong other things. In my college career I focused much on psychological disorders of children and how to help children. I have acquired excellent writing and research skills because of my educational background. I enjoy a challenging situation that enables me to focus and solve a problem. Over the last year I tutored a ten year old girl with ADHD in fifth grade on reading comprehension, writing ... read more
