Collaborative & Fun Teacher

I believe that each student has a unique learning style of that must be discovered in real-time. Therefore I tailor the lessons towards an open, organic, collaborative process. I focus on small incremental steps designed to build momentum and flow states, which is the best way to start anything. The goal of any lesson is to bring the student to a place where they can learn on their own. The purpose of learning is fun!

Tutoring without Tears.

Students learn best when they feel safe to explore and learn from past mistakes. In fact, 'mistakes' should be viewed as opportunities to improve skills and learning strategies. I use 'play therapy' most often to teach skills and strategies. Multiple studies have demonstrated that children learn best through play.

My comments on tutoring Government : I have yet to offer my services as a tutor for this subject, but my experience as a historian leads me to believe that I would be a proficient tutor.

I graduated from Princeton University with a BA (cum laude) in History and will be starting a Ph.D. program in History in the fall. I served as a tutor at the middle school level during my college years and have worked with High School students on History, English and ACT/SAT prep for the past year.I have also served in various other academically-related positions, including as a research assistant and library assistant.
I like to nurture my students without enabling them. I tend to ask my students pointed questions about the subject at hand to inspire critical thinking and push them to arrive at their own interpretation of the correct answer. I feel that this best prepares them for college-level work.

My comments on tutoring Government : I have a liberal arts degree in international studies and experience in the area.

Though my primary field is sociology, I am versed in Liberal Arts due to my experience and background. Not all students are sociology majors and thus, not all students respond to a sociological manner of thinking. By presenting primary documents, government documents and other sources, I am able to draw out the contributions of a variety of students. I am especially pleased to present visual material to students who have not regularly engaged with such texts, and are surprised at how much a picture of movie has to say about sociological ideas and its connection to contemporary world. I am not afraid to admit uncertainty, for uncertainty provides the basis for all new knowledge. My philosophy applies equally at both the general introductory level, as well as in more advanced sources, where students engage material at more detailed topical levels. I continually learn from my students ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My first teaching experience was as a high school senior where I was given the opportunity to teach a small group of 5th graders as part of the Missouri A+ program. We began with division, quickly moving into linear and nonlinear algebra, before touching on the fundamentals of complex numbers, graph theory and trigonometry, before concluding with a derivation of the quadratic formula and its applications. I spent three semesters as the academic chair for my fraternity enforcing study hours for fraternity brothers with lower GPA’s; tutoring students in algebra, calculus, physics, and computer science, among other fields. I have also had five years of experience in Latin up to the college level with one year of Japanese.
I believe that every student can meet his or her potential provided that the subject matter is presented in a way that makes sense to them and that any material c ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Some students remember best what they see, some what they hear, but nearly all will best recall material that they see hear say and do something with. My teaching style is one that tries to incorporate seeing, hearing, saying, and doing and getting students to use higher order thinking skills as much as I can. More than just rote memory and recall, I want then to be able to apply acquired knowledge to solve problems or create new ideas based on their previous learning.
I have worked in both the public and private school settings and have 20 years teaching experience. I enjoy the most the opportunity to work with a child individually because that direct time and attention often makes it easier to assess areas of weakness and how best to adapt instruction to the learner's needs and learning style. One of my most cherished teaching positions was at the Arkansas School for Mathemat ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy tutoring. I love watching the students gain confidence as we work through the problems. I believe my attitude and approach to teaching helps the students. I provide enough understanding to the students but still challenge them. The worst thing you can do, is just give the answers. I believe everyone wants to learn and do their best, but it is hard when you do not understand what you are trying to do. I enjoy providing that one on one attention to open their minds and show them they can do it.
I have always wanted to teach Math and Science. I have volunteered tutored on and off for five years for friends and family. I have a BS in Chemistry and have worked as a Chemist for 13 years. I currently am working as an accountant. I enjoy formulas and showing my students how everything comes togeher. Most people find Math frustrating and I enjoy showing them a dif ... read more

Adaptation and flexibility are the keys to teaching and tutoring. Children have varying styles of learning and each requires a different teaching style. My goal as a tutor is to identify the learning style of the student and adapt to it. I believe that all students have the ability to learn if they are provided with the right environment. I believe in making learning fun. I am a patient; kind and highly-energetic individual who would love to help children obtain their learning goals.
Throughout my school experience, I have been a top performer. I attended a "gifted" program in elementary school. I was the Valedictorian at Hagerstown Junior/Senior High School in Hagerstown, Indiana. I received a full-tuition scholarship to the University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana.
