Math, Science, Writing, and Critical Thinking

My favorite part about teaching is the moment of sudden understanding that you can see in a student's eyes when they've got it. The challenge, of course, is getting to that moment, especially in a subject like math or science. While certain subjects may come easier to some people than to others, I do not believe that anyone is "incapable" of understanding and excelling in any field of study. If understanding is lacking, that is only because the student needs to be presented the material in a way that makes sense to them.
During my time at Colorado College, I worked as a chemistry tutor helping my younger peers traverse the challenging General Chemistry and Organic Chemistry course loads. But because of CC's rigorous alternative schedule--where you take one class at a time, for one month each class--it's necessary to learn to pick up new concepts very quickly, I often found myself b ... read more

Arts and Sciences go hand in hand

Throughout my high school and college careers, I had the privileged to tutor and help educate some of my fellow students and younger individuals. I was also a swim coach for three years and lessons instructor for seven. I have also had the wonderful opportunity to teach a few students and children with special needs and those who need a different method of teaching.
I am very analytical and will be able to decipher the best method for each individual. I know not all people learn the same way.

Tutor with 13 years experience

I'm an environmental engineer who has been tutoring for the last 13 years. I enjoy working with children and excell at working with children who might be struggling with comprehension or who have learning disabilities. I have experience working with children who are ESL or ELL. I have worked with elementary, secondary and high school students.
Make learning fun and everyone wins! Not all children absorb material the same way. I try to explore different ways of presenting material and working through concepts to relate the material to something that can be understood.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am by nature a lifelong learner. I am curious, introspective, and always probing to discover hidden meanings, connections, and possibilities. A professional musician/entertainer since age fourteen, I apply, among many other traits, my considerable experience in presentation, and my sense of humor to present a higher level and enjoyable learning experience, reaching for increased interest far beyond the page and pale.
I have traveled extensively, this experiential vantage point providing an understanding of the differences & similarities within and across the world's cultures. In History & Civics: lessons of the past examined in the context of present and future. In Economics we examine the economic realites which connect all nations. In Psychology & Sociology is an exploration into how the mind and society affect human behavior, interacting for either prosperity or problems. ... read more

Experienced. Effective. The logical choice.

As a tutor of student athletes at Indiana University, I tutored students from all walks of life. I began by tutoring Biology and Spanish but the need for tutors in English, Writing, Chemistry and Statistics soon arose and I stepped up to fill those positions. Using previous knowledge from AP classes in high school, as well as recent knowledge gained from my classes, I was able to successfully convey new information in easy to understand and applicable terms to these students. This past year I tutored high school math, English and Genetics.
I have always enjoyed teaching others sharing my love of learning. I find it most effective to use a variety of methods to successfully teach information. Material is best learned when it can be easily understood by the student and has practical applications for everyday life. I am not the type of tutor to just hand out answers to problems. More About This Tutor...

My style is patient, respectful, fair and adaptive. The goal is to find what works well for the student, not take a rigid one-size-fits-all approach that a classroom may employ. I start looking right away for “What is missing?” I have seen many students who are perfectly capable but struggle because they missed a fundamental building block. Learning is always difficult. This is normal and I make sure students remember that. There is a balance to be struck where the student is pushing hard enough to improve but not so hard that they withdraw from the learning process.
I began as an English major then graduated in Physics with honors, cutting edge research experience in both academia and industry, as a published writer, photojournalist and poet. As a result, I can understand why some very intelligent people who perform well with the arts can sometimes be frustrated by the math and sc ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I am patient and love to work with children. I believe that every child has a natural drive to seek knowledge. However, classes at school are often too big to allow for different approaches to teaching.
When I came to the U.S. I was very happy to get the opportunity to improve my English as well as follow my passion in researching environmental problems. I learned in multiple classes and my research group how important team work is in accelerating knowledge, solve problems, and share what I learned with other people. As a undergraduate student I had the opportunity to tutor multiple High-school students in Chemistry and Math.

A Little Bit About Me...

I received a degree in Elementary Education (K-6) from the University of North Carolina, one of the top ranked education schools in the US. Through completion of the curriculum for the school of education I completed over 400 hours as an intern for elementary classrooms. I have worked in K, 1st, 3rd, and 4th grades teaching math, science, history, and language arts. In all grades save K, I developed and taught my own lesson plans, assisted the teacher with all classroom related activities, taught small groups, and worked one-on-one tutoring students. I also have experience outside of the classroom working as a Math and Spelling tutor, as well as a preschool educator.
I believe that not all children learn the same way. As a teacher it is imperative to detect and assist individual learning differences among students. Through my experience working with children, I have found the best ... read more
