Turning your weakness into your strength

I help guide the student along, having them discover much of the information in a trial and error fashion. I tend to use the questions they are struggling with the most, making similar examples, then walking them through these problems and breaking down the problems until the student understands the how the process works.
I have been tutoring for over seven years, starting with my peers in tenth grade. I have tutored a wide range of subjects, from Geometry through Calculus III, from general computer knowledge through utilizing the advanced functions of Microsoft Access. A Little Bit About Me...

I generally teach through visual aids and through very thorough explanations. If the student doesn't understand the first time I explain something, I will explain it in a different way and will keep explaining it in different ways until he/she fully understands what's being taught. I try my hardest to teach by explaining concepts logically and showing WHY and HOW, rather than simply saying something is what it is "just because."

I am a strong believer that a tutor is a friend first, and an instructor second. Many times I have found that a student's difficulties issued from personal matters, such as a lack of confidence, rather than specific weaknesses with the material. I always make every effort to allow a student to feel as comfortable as possible within the instructional dynamic, and in my experience, this has made all the difference. I have six children of my own and know that every child learns differently, even when they come from the same family. I believe the majority of children can master the material they are presented in school, but it is a matter of time. Many children take a little more time to understand the concepts and master the skills needed to move on to the next level. Sadly many of these children aren't given the time to do it and are just passed on to the next level. My teaching style ultimately depends of the student. I work much better with an individual or small group than with a class because I can find the angle that works best for each student. For younger children, I like to make learning into different games to keep their attention. For older students, I think it is important to establish some level of confidence early on within a subject so that they do not get too discouraged while new material is presented.
I have always had a good ability in math and sciences. I obtained a BA in Psychology from the University of Rochester, with a minor in Brain and Cognitive Sciences.
