A Little Bit About Me...

I have been a nanny for many years to children in an after school homework help environment. I did my student teaching in a St. Louis public school with urban low income children. My comments on tutoring Elementary Reading : I worked at the mathew dickey's boys' club with student's ranging from the 2nd through 6th grade on all subject matters. However, I'm naturally gifted in writing, grammar, physicology, biochemistry and anatomy. Relative to grammar, I was on the journalism team all four years of high school, serving as managaing editor, and sports editor, and was the only writer ot be granted free-lance editorial writing. Furthermore, during college and since I've taken my knowledge of pharmacoogy, biochemisry, chemistry, anatomy, etc. and have written several referenced articels for the online health magainze www.mindandmuscle.net under my name Tom Rayhawk

Learning can be hard. Memorization can be hard. Knowing how to determine the proper equation to use in a chemistry or math equation can be hard. What I focus on with my students is not simply telling them the information and how they should go about finding the right answer but, more importantly, why the answer they are choosing is correct. What that does is to force them to learn the actual skill and when to use a given equation or what a sign or symbol indicates in terms of the type of problem they are trying to solve. By doing this, I find, the student is able to get to the core of not simply stuffing equations, grammar terms, or scientific terminology in their heads and then unloading them on the test. Rather - and this is my main objective with each student - they understand why their answer is right. They LEARN. An easy way to test this is when quizzing them and browsing thei ... read more

Elementary Reading is one of my top subjects! Certified IL Teacher

As a certified teacher, I have several hundred hours in a classroom with field experience and student teaching. I am familiar with state and Common Core standards, classroom lingo, and classroom/school procedures. I have experience with creating lessons that are engaging, interactive, and tied to real-life scenarios. I also have experience with small group and one-on-one instruction.
I like to teach the student, which means I tailor lessons/activities and supplemental materials to the student. The goal is to see where the student, where the student needs to be, and find the road that will merge the two in the most beneficial way for the student.

My comments on tutoring Elementary Reading : Reading was a key component to my curriculum each year. I love to read and have been able to help learners gain more proficiency with their reading skills.

I have worked with children and teens all my life. I was a camp counselor at a YMCA camp for 6 summers in my teens and early 20s. I taught 5th grade my first year (class of 36 students!) and then taught 3rd grade for a year, 2nd grade for three years, and 4th grade for three years--all in public schools. Then I taught English at the middle school level for four years in a private school. After that I subbed and tutored for a year until I was hired to teach in a K-8 building at the 8th grade level. I taught there for nearly 20 years before I retired, teaching science, pre-algebra, and communication arts (English, reading, vocabulary, writing, grammar, and spelling.) While in that position, I was the sponsor of the science fair, building-wide, for nearly ten years. Since retirement, I have subbed, tutored, have written and published a book, and am writing a daily blog.

Finding learning solutions one learner at a time!

I have 25 plus years experience in teaching children and adults. I am currently working on my PhD in education with an emphasis on curriculum and instruction. I enjoy working one-on-one as well as in a classroom setting. Since I am completing my current studies online, I have a good understanding of online learning and studying style. I am a firm believer that everyone can learn and I love helping unlock the key to learning for someone struggling with a problem. There is no stupid question - only those that have not yet been asked.
I believe each student has an optimum learning style and I try to match my teaching strategies to that style. When working with adults, I try to establish motivations for learning first and then move on to the next step - how best to master the infomration or skill.

PhD wants to tutor

I have a PhD in Spanish and Portuguese from a well-known university in the U.S. I have about 20 years of experience teaching Spanish and Portuguese on the college level. I lived in Brazil and have traveled extensively all over Latin America, Spain and Portugal. I am a native speaker of English and would enjoy tutoring ESL again. I have taught GED and tutored in Math, English and Social Studies. I got very high scores on my math ACT.

My comments on tutoring Elementary Reading : Dr. Ben Carson started his educational career reading those subjects which interested him the most. Reading is a gift we give to ourselves. Let's learn to do this with gusto!

An experienced teacher K-12, teaching reading, vocabulary, grammar, study skills, comprehension, math and science at one of St.Louis' local districts who moved on to teach at St. Louis Community College yet remains devoted to personal learning and learning projects. One of those recent learning project was incorporation of technology and personal computers in the classroom.
I believe in humor, fun, clear organization, and associated evaluation. I believe in preparing the student for life-long learning because learning is a pleasure, not a chore.

Tutoring without Tears.

Students learn best when they feel safe to explore and learn from past mistakes. In fact, 'mistakes' should be viewed as opportunities to improve skills and learning strategies. I use 'play therapy' most often to teach skills and strategies. Multiple studies have demonstrated that children learn best through play.
I have 30+ years of experience helping students with a variety of disabilities which include language disorders. My experience encompasses Early Childhood Special Education, Elementary, Middle, High School, and post-secondary. I have helped students with ADD/ADHD, Autism/Aspergers/PDD-NOS, learning disabilities, multiple disabilities, medically fragile, language impaired and ESL (English as a Second Language).

I'm very positive and communicative person.

My mom is kindergartner and teacher of Russian language and Literature. I used to help to her 1-2 days a week. So I have an experience how to teach them, check students' home works, communicate and find best approach to students and children...The main purpose of my teaching is not only money. I would like to find new friends with their interesting backgrounds and I can learn anything from them too.I have What's up and Viber 13144064010. If you have questions, feel free.
Student-Centered Approach which means teacher is the authority figure, but the student plays an active role in what is learned. The students are learning the information the teacher is giving, and the teacher is learning how best to approach his students.
