I try to alleviate math anxiety, and introduce thoughtfulness as a way to solve problems. I teach how to understand math rather than just mimicking the behavior of the teacher. I have taught Spanish as well as tutored people in Spanish, music (guitar) and English composition. Also, I have some experience with teaching English as a Second Language. I taught beginning level Spanish to 8-12 graders for one year. If I were to sum my "style" of teaching up, it would be "patience with determination". Perhaps my best achievment is with my wife who recently graduated from A-B Tech. Kate has always had a block toward anything mathematic. She had one course between her and graduation, college algebra! The bottom line here is that I patiently stuck through this course treatment with her to a successful completion, she completed the course and graduated with a well earned "C" or a 78%. With patience and determination shared together with the student, impediments like a dread for math can be overcome.
The civil engineering program that I successfully completed into a 4 year BS degree, was math and science intensive, with about half the courses requiring laboratory work. I think all of these members of my family have influenced me in a positive way in regards to teaching. I am a compassionate, patient person and am willing to help when people need it. A Little Bit About Me...

I believe in good classroom management and organized lesson plans. I set appropriate boundaries and expect the students to follow the rules that are set before them. That being said I try to make the learning as fun as possible but organized. I also try to bring in anything that they are interested in to make them enjoy the subject they are learning. If I can find an example in life they can relate to that will help them learn something I will find it and bring it in. I love working with children and really love math.

As a high school student, I was very active in extracurricular activities. I participated in the rotary club, volunteering at local soup kitchens. I was also a member of the Newspaper, Quiz Bowl, Robotics Team, soccer and baseball throughout my high school career. Through volunteering at the Boys and Girls club, I was turned out to tutoring students in Algebra and Trigonometry. I spent my Junior and Senior year tutoring students in these areas of mathematics.

I received my B.A. in English from Appalachian State University where I also received training in education. Afterward, I became an instructor at Richmond Community College, teaching basic reading and math to adults with learning disabilities as well as a course on PC literacy & business training.
