Prior to and during my employment with Metropolitan Community College (Between 1998 and 2007) I was a volunteer tutor with non traditional students in the Adult Basic Education/General Education Development ABE/GED program of Metro community college.
I love to see the proverbial light come on and the students eyes widen and they say "OH! I get it!" I've tutored a wide variety of students from diverse backgrounds. I try to make mathematics fun, like a puzzle to be figured out, and remove the "hard chore" stigma which is generally hard pressed into a students mind by the time I arrive. Getting the student to believe in themselves and believe mathematics isn't a daunting task it's just difficult until you learn the tricks is my goal. I've notice most students find word problems to be most challenging so I purchased a word problem book to draw examples from which seems to help.

With my experience in many classrooms, I am a firm believer that all children can learn. However, each child has different needs, and they will learn in different ways. As a teacher, I try to provide instruction in a variety of ways to accommodate to a variety of learners. Many struggling students will succeed if material is taught in a different form. Hands-on and discovery learning are both excellent ways of adapting for students. I believe the best way to teach a child is to get to know them and their interests, and provide instruction in a way that fits their needs.

A Little Bit About Me...

Throughout my college experiences I was given the opportunity to teach a diverse group of learners. I feel that this has prepared me in my efforts to become a better teacher. In my field based experiences and student teaching I learned about new approaches to teaching several subjects to elementary school students. These subjects include math, science, social studies, and language arts. I have been given the opportunity to teach these subjects on a one-on-one and whole class level.
