I obtained a B.S. in Biology, with a concentration in aquatic science, from Wittenberg University in 2006. During my undergraduate studies, I tutored elementary students in math and science twice a week for two years. After college, I moved into the marine science profession. In August of 2008, I started teaching High School Biology I, Earth and Space Science, and Physical Science to students in Polk County. In addition, after school hours were spent with two students taking AP Biology classes. Both students achieved a 4 or higher on their placement exams. I believe my style of teaching is unique and what I would of liked to have access to as I was learning myself. I have to agree computers and all there errors they give and slow speeds, really what do you do? I teach in a way so you can teach yourself. I think of it is harder to remember everything and where it is and I just teach you where to find it. I take the approach as it was a long time ago, if you walk over to a filing cabinet, you open the right door, you scroll to the last name, and pull the file, all the info is there and you didn't remember anything but the last name.

Learning Can be Fun!

I like to allow the student to read the material once and clarity any areas that need more explanation. Then I will allow them to answer questions from the material read and help them where needed to choose the correct answer and understand the reason for the answers. I like to reward a certain level of correct answers with points that can be redeemed for interesting small prizes. I also consider myself very patient and interested in the student having a strong foundation for future learning.

My teaching style involves a lot of examples and having the student answer the questions on the board. I am able to come up with examples off the top of my head and have the student work through the problem to prevent "dumb" mistakes (such as forgetting a minus sign). I am very patient and allow my students as much time as possible and encourage them to ask whenever they are stuck. I try to show that math can be fun and interesting and that there are applications out in the real world.
I began tutoring math for Stetson University which ranged from Algebra 1 to Calculus 2. I then began tutoring privately and I have tutored lower level math and advanced statistics. I have tutored a student who was failing calculus in class but then they earned the highest possible grade on the standardized test. I also have a degree in mathematics.
