I believe in the Democratic approach to Educating the young. I start the year by asking the students what they would like to learn that year and we record this on a large sheet of paper. Students feel happy to know their wishes are so considered and then at the end of the year we review the list and they see that they have cov ... read more

I like to break every concept and principle down into its most basic components. An artist breaks down a drawing into its basic shapes, and is able to create what may at first seem like a complex object to draw. Explaining mathematical principles is almost as difficult as learning them, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Teaching in groups and teaching individually both have their advantages and disadvantages. Teaching one-on-one allows the student to have individual attention, while teaching in groups allows more flexibility and allows students to learn concepts from each other. I consider myself able to do both, but one-on-one often works best.
I am a chemical engineer and I currently work for a biofuels plant. I consider myself as having a good way of presenting the science behind biodiesel to the other employees who do not have a scientific background. As such, I oft ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

Having received an MA in French and Italian language and literature and recently submitting a PhD which focussed on Basque and Catalan nationalism, I was able to hone my language skills, and put them to use during many hours of fieldwork I conducted in France and Spain. The completion of graduate degrees has also allowed me to develop my writing, analytical and communication skills. Over the past six years, I have taught French and Italian on an individual and group basis from an elementary through to tertiary level. I have also tutored ESL on a voluntary basis.
As a teacher, I consider it my duty as not only to disseminate knowledge but also to inspire the students I teach and in turn engender their interest in the subject being taught. I believe that the ideal setting for successful learning to occur is in a comfortable atmosphere in which students feel they are able to contribut ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have experience tutoring anything from phonics to college level writing. I taught preschool for a year and a half at the Lion and Lamb Christian Preschool in Reno, NV. I have also tutored at the UNR Writing Center (when it still existed) during the Fall semester of '08. Since October 2008 I have tutored at the Reno Huntington Learning Center where I teach phonics all the way up to SAT and ACT Verbal test prep. While at UNR I took an upper division English Class entitled "How to Tutor an English Writer." I also have a minor of Spanish from UNR. I am by no means fluent in the language but can read and understand it fairly well. I am comfortable tutoring anything below advanced high school Spanish.
