Individualized learning/teaching for optimal comprehension

I take a hands on material approach to learning/teaching. I feel that young students learn best when they can physically learn, such as through blocks/puzzles/interactive learning devices and other similar approaches. I try to let the student use their hands as much as I can to aid in their learning process. I earned a degree in biology with a minor in forensic Psychology. Although Biology was my major, I took math classes from Pre-calculus to differential equations although i did not need it but because I loved math. A Little Bit About Me...

When working with students my ultimate goal is for them to be able to explain the concepts to me. I usually start sessions with any questions they have, here is where I would explain concepts in terms easier to understand (usually methods I used when learning the material). Once they feel comfortable will ask them questions that range from simple plug and chug math problems, to more complex explanations. Even if the student tells me they don't know the answer I will ask them to try. I find most do know the answer or only need a little help to obtain it. This ultimately creates confidence which leads to better test scores.
