I have been working at Hermitage High School in Henrico County as an English teacher for the past 4 years. I have taught 9th grade, but I have spent most of my time teaching 11th grade. I have taught a variety of "levels," from standard to college prep to honors. Every year I teach about 130 students. Last year, only 5 of my students didn't p ass the 11th grade SOL, and after re-takes the following week, only 1 didn't pass. I was trained to be a SAT tutor using the TCA program in the county. My teaching styles vary depending on the student. I had one student who was an adult, moving to Ecuador for 2 years to work. I taught him the basics using methods such as flash cards, workbooks, and homework assignments. We met 3x a week for 3 months. In college I taught a Spanish course for a Christian Highschool near my university. This was rather different since the students were in their early teens. My method with them was 'FUN.' I used pop culture and things that interested them to help them learn. For example: I had them bring in a picture of their favorite celebrity and they had to describe the colors, clothing, and characteristics of that celebrity in Spanish. It was a success.
