My comments on tutoring Science : I hold a Ph.D. In Biomedical Science with a focus on molecular virology and molecular biochemistry..

I believe that stimulating conversation and allowing people to arrive at answers on their own and through experience is the best way to form lasting connections.
I took a variety of Biology classes and Labs at WPI mostly focused on Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics. I recently finished my PH.D. where I studied control of viral gene expression. This work encompassed a variety of biological disciplines including virology, cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, and molecular genetics, all of which I am quite experienced in. My ultimate aim would be to teach the student how to successfully learn on his own. I would first determine the set of circumstances unique to each student. For example, are they far behind their class or just having problems grasping some concepts? I would modify my teaching style depending on the situation, but in general I identify facts that need to be memorized and concepts that need to be understood. We would work through material, in a textbook, for example. Finally the student must apply logic and related skills (algebra, for example) needed for problem solving. Problem solving ties facts and concepts together and brings a deeper comprehension of and familiarity with the subject.
